UPDATE: A WOMAN continues to fight for her life in hospital this afternoon after her car was literally ripped in half in a horror crash on the Gold Coast this morning.
Police say the woman, believed to be aged in her 40s, was travelling south along Ferry Road at Southport when she struck a power pole just south of Benowa Road at around 5.10am.
The force of the impact was so powerful, the woman’s car split in two, with the front half travelling off the road and into trees.
The rear of the vehicle came to rest in the middle of Ferry Road, near The Southport School.
The woman, who was the only person inside the car at the time of the collision, suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.
Luckily, no bystanders were injured.
The southbound lanes of Ferry Road were closed for several hours while specialist officers from the Forensic Crash Unit examined the scene, however reopened shortly after 9.30am.
