Accused Bourke Street driver ‘fit to stand trial’

Accused Bourke Street driver Dimitrious ‘James’ Gargasoulas has been found fit to stand trial in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

It took a jury just a few hours to reach the verdict following a week of hearing evidence about Gargasoulas’ mental state.

The verdict comes after a jury of eight men and four women failed to reach a unanimous decision in June.

Mr Gargasoulas has been charged with six counts of murder and 28 counts of attempted murder after allegedly driving his car into crowds in Melbourne’s CBD last year.

The trial will begin next Wednesday.
