AFL releases round one fixture for 2019

THE 2019 AFL season will start with what’s expected to be a blood bath between the best and worst performing sides from 2018.

Minor Premiers Richmond will take on wooden spoon holders Carlton in the season opener at the MCG on Thursday March 21.

The Friday night game will see grand finalists Collingwood face Geelong, also at the MCG.

Saturday’s games will include match-ups between Melbourne and Port Adelaide, Adelaide and Hawthorn and Western Bulldogs verse Sydney Swans.

While the Brisbane Lions will face a major challenge when they meet defending Premiers West Coast.

The Gold Coast Suns go into their first game with a chance. After finishing 2018 in 17th spot, they’ll meet 16th placed St Kilda at Marvel Stadium (formerly Etihad Stadium).

The final two games will be between GWS and Essendon and Fremantle verse North Melbourne.

The full 2019 season fixture will be announced on Wednesday.
