The many markets operating in schools, parks and along the beachfront, offering everything from vintage jewellery to organic food, are a part of Gold Coaster's way of life, and hundreds have proved they are willing to fight for them.

The Village Markets, a platform for many local fashion designers, have been issued with a notice from the Gold Coast City Council asking them to submit an application to continue to run.

Several markets across the city have been issued with the notices which stated they did not have approval to operate.

But Coasters have mobilised in their hundreds to stand up for the markets and local town planner Ross Heatley has offered to help the organisers of The Village Markets (TVM) prepare their application.

Founders Marissa Bowden and Sarah Schoeller make little profit from the monthly markets, held at Burleigh Heads State School.

TVM supporters, almost 4,000 Facebook fans and nearly 600 locals who have signed a petition to the coucil, claim the Coast's markets need to be supported, not penalised.

"The Village Markets provides an opportunity for creative people to showcase their talents, and for consumers to get something made with love and artistic brilliance," wrote stallholder Lola of Lola's Enchanted Garden on TVM's Facebook page.

"The Council is imposing all sorts of crazy regulations, which leaves these markets in jeopardy of being closed down, and all of us who appreciate the art of something handmade being submerged in a sea of mass produced of junk," she added.

The council claim the notices were issued after a complaint from another market operator and the $4000 council application fee was waived, but the women still need to submit a report from a town planner by April 21.
