Hundreds of Gold Coast families and midwives made themselves heard as they protested outside the Gold Coast Hospital after the Birthing Centre was closed down without warning this morning.

Gold Coast Health District CEO Dr Adrian Nowitzke said there had been a number of allegations, which he could not discuss, and the centre had been closed temporarily over safety concerns.

"There are concerns with safety," he told the vocal crowd.

"I understand your concerns and I'm happy to sit down and resolve this issue."

The angry protesters rallied on Little High Street, Southport this morning, claiming there was no consultation over the issue and the concerns are baseless.

The Australian College of Midwives Queensland spokesperson Jenny Gamble said the centre has an "enviable" safety record.

"It's a beat up," she said. "We want it open today."

Deirdrie Cullen, founding member of the Friends of Gold Coast Birth Centre, said women have been left in limbo over the sudden closure.

She said women would now be forced to have children in regular wards, rather than the traditional natural method offered by the centre.

"It's amazing to have this turn out and I hope the people who decided to close it down are looking out the window."

Among those in rallying, Karen who turned up despite being due.

"If it's not open tonight, I probably won't have my child in the same place I had my son," she said.

"It's such a wonderful experience that the midwives provide us with and it's my body, I'm having this baby and I want to have it in the Birth Centre; please don't stop me."
