Local gardens could get a good soak leading into the weekend as storms and heavy rainfall are expected for the Gold Coast and Hinterland.

Contrary to reports of hail, and possible flash flooding expected to hit the region in the next two days, the Weather Bureau denies reports of conditions similar to a mini tornado.

Senior Forecaster Bryan Rolstone says this afternoon's thunderstorms will bring heavy wind and rain, but is unlikely to produce hail stones.

Residents are being told to keep a close eye on weather warnings over the next 24 hours and to secure all loose items, staying indoors if warnings are issued.
