On any typical Australia Day, Gold Coasters would be heading to the beach. But thanks to recent wet and wild weather, many local beaches are closed.

Following an assessment of sand and surf conditions this morning, the City Council has closed seven patrolled beaches, between Southport and Greenmount.

Rips and debris also played a part in the decision to keep swimmers out of the surf.

It's believed even more may be closed later.

Closed beaches: Southport, Surfers Paradise (outside the SLSC), Broadbeach (outside the SLSC), Nobby, Burleigh (outside the SLSC) and North Burleigh, Tallebudgera and Palm Beach to Greenmount.
