Gold Coast City Council want to get kids walking and cycling to school again.

According to research conducted by Griffith University, more than 70 percent of children are driven to and from school today, compared to only 25 percent 40 years ago.

To combat these figures, Council are trialling the Active School Travel (AST) program at three Coast Schools; Norfolk Village State School, St Vincent's School and Mudgeeraba State School.

AST was an intiative developed by Brisbane City Council in 2004 and has been a huge success at 21 Brisbane schools.

The program is focuses on educating students in road and personal safety awareness when travelling to and from school, as well as general bike training.

Chair of City Planning, Councillor Ted Shepherd said the Council-funded program will involve developing an individual travel plan for each participating school.

"The trial will help us to identify what infrastructure, such as walkways and bikeways, we need to build at each school," he said.

The program will also encourage sustainable transport options such as public transport and carpooling.
