Member for Gaven Dr Alex Douglas MP has released a video showing the proposed new Gold Coast Show site completely under water.

The footage was taken at Carrara during the severe wet weather which hit the Coast last week.

"This is probably the most unsuitable site for any major development for a new showgrounds," says Douglas in the footage.

"To safely do anything on the site, you would have to raise everything two metres. Imagine the cost of somewhere between 15 and 20 hectares raised 2 metres and what is would do to the surrounding properties."

With the Gold Coast Show's lease at Parklands expiring in 2014, discussions have begun to find new home for the event.

The Queensland Government wants the show to move to Carrara to allow for an athletes village to be built at Parklands for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Show society president Peter Johnstone said they will not comply with the Government's proposal as the Carrara site is unsuitable and the move would bankrupt the community group.

Premier Anna Bligh said the show could not remain at Parklands and the athletes' village built on the Carrara site instead.

"It would mean firstly that we'd be breaching our contract with the Commonwealth Games and I don't think any 'Gold Coaster' would want me to do that but it would also mean the athletes being in a place ... [that is] not next to the bus stop and it means we'd have a residential village after the games not located anywhere near places where people work and close to public transport," she said.

"The Carrara site offers a strategic opportunity for the show to be co-located with a big stadium that can hold big events potentially associated with the show, so look I don't think this is a time for squabbling about these things," she said.
