The fight to save a pair of 80-year-old trees in Currumbin is tipped to reach boiling point today.

Council have started clearing vegetation around the trees and have brought in machines to cut down the camphor laurels, which are classified as noxious weeds.

The trees are being removed to make way for a $700,000 boardwalk under the Thrower Drive Bridge.

Despite the loppers moving in, Gold Coast woman Lynne Hargreaves remains chained to a tree.

She has collected approximately 400 signatures from Currumbin residents to keep the trees since chaining herself to one yesterday.

Council has said the trees would be removed regardless.
