Gold Coaster Bernard Tomic has advanced to the third round of the Australian Open, overcoming American Sam Querrey in Melbourne.

It wasn't quite as tough as his opening round match against Spain's Fernando Verdasco, but Tomic withstood Querrey's early charge to win the match 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-3) 6-3.

"I was happy to win that first round.  Now to win the second and play, you know, well, and come back from another set behind was really good," he said.

The 19 year-old now faces Ukranian Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Tonight Lleyton Hewitt will be aiming to join Tomic in the third round when he meets American veteran Andy Roddick.

The American has triumped in their past six meetings.
