Coolangatta surfer Ellie-Jean Coffey used her pointbreak experience to topple World No. 1 Joanne Defay at the Billabong World Junior Championships at Burleigh Heads yesterday.

Coffey's younger sister Holly Sue came in second in the Round 1 heat, with the pair dominating the waves over Defay.

Coffey scored 12.83, narrowly beating her sister Holly Sue’s total of 12.03.

French talent Defay bombed out with a score of 7.57, despite Burleigh offering small and clean surf yesterday.

“It’s good to surf against my sister, but it’s also nerve racking because if she beat me she’d never let me live it down,” Ellie-Jean Coffey said.

“I’m so thankful to Billabong for giving me the wildcard into this event, I’ve got no pressure and nothing to lose, but everything to gain.”
