ATO website crashes as people rush to access super

The Australian Taxation Office website has crashed as people rush to access their superannuation early.

Today is the first day people can withdraw a second amount of $10,000 from super accounts, given it is the first day of the new financial year.

“We understand significant numbers of people need to access our online services,” the ATO website states.

“We are proactively managing our online traffic so that systems continue to be available.”

It comes after the Australian Prudential and Regulation Authority warned there could be delays to the processing of applications due to the large amount of Aussies expected to access the scheme for a second time, with delays expected to continue throughout July.

More than 2.2 million people have already access more than 18.5 billion from their accounts since the scheme became available in April.

The average amount accessed per person is about $8400.
