Baby run over and killed by maxi taxi

UPDATED at 1:20 PM | A 12-MONTH-OLD baby boy has been run over and killed by a maxi taxi in a tragic accident outside his aunty’s home on the Gold Coast.

It happened on Excalibur Court on Sovereign Islands at Paradise Point just after 10.30am on Friday.

It’s understood the infant was run over by the maxi taxi after it had dropped him, his three siblings, all aged under 12, and their aunty, 38, home on the affluent island.

The one-year-old boy sustained critical head injuries and died at the scene, police confirmed.

The exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy, or how the baby came to be near the vehicle was not immediately known.

The children’s aunty and the driver of the taxi, a 32-year-old man, were both taken to hospital in shock.

Police said the cab driver was “beside himself” and returned negative alcohol and drug tests at the scene.

It’s understood the children are being cared for by their aunty while their parents are overseas.

She was seen cradling her deceased nephew in her arms in the street immediately after the tragedy.

The infant’s siblings are also believed to have witnessed the horrific incident.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Excalibur Court remain closed while the scene is examined and investigations are carried out.
