Bernard Tomic takes out the Chengdu Open

Gold Coaster Bernard Tomic could be on the road to redemption in his tennis career after taking out the Chengdu Open in China overnight.

The 25-year-old locked down the win in just 3 sets, 6-1 3-6 7-6 (9-7), against world number 13 Fabio Fognini.

Tomic hadn’t even played someone ranked that high in over a year, let alone won the match.

After entering the competition ranked 123rd in the world, Tomic is now predicted to shoot up the ranks to 77, making him the fifth ranked Australian man.

The win will also guarantee him entry into next year’s Australian Open.

Upon winning the final, Tomic dropped to the ground, overwhelmed with emotion.
