I popped down to Sydney for the night on Tuesday to preview the best of the Spring/Summer ready to wear 2010 collections from Milan, NY, Paris and London at the Fashion Group’s International Fashion Flash - a 50 minute DVD presentation.
I always love seeing what the other side of the world is doing – what outrageous fashions they showcase and then forecast what will and what won’t be a hit in Australia.
It was “fashion as you liked it” and for the workforce. Suits taking a more relaxed approach as the line between fashion and corporate became more blurred. Denim went from the farming and mining communities to the runway. Epaulets are back, White is white hot, the security of pure colours seem to mean that designers are seeking security in neutral colours – sand/beige/camel are going to be huge!

Other colours to look out for are:

Lemon, orange (burnt and bright), aqua, silver and of course ye old faithful… black. Valentino surprised many with no red this season.
The intimacy of apparel was no longer with underwear being worn on the outside as shown by Karl Lagerfeld.

Leather made an appearance in the form of cropped jumpsuits and jackets, questionable whether suitable for all climates, let alone bodies!!

Asymmetry – where “2 sides agreed to disagree” were featured as did the folded origami geometric style by Jason Wu. My pick will be the continued used of draping and gathered materials. The craftsmanship was truly exquisite – Vera Wang and Givenchy creating some to die for garments that just fell endlessly over the silhouette creating a relaxed comfortable look that would take you anywhere. Bunching by Vivienne Westwood complemented the ruffle, which brought a soft comparison to the asymmetry and origami style pieces. Erin Wasson wore gorgeous frayed shorts in natural cotton – natural fibers definitely on the rise.

Prints also got a look in (although did nothing for me, they were a little too busy). The stripe still very much maintains its presence as is animal print showcased by Louis Vuitton - I do however think animal print has had its time in Australia.  Armani and D&G loved the florals. Printed silk fabrics were delicious – obviously depending on the print!  The shoulder is not as broad as last season but is definitely still visible. Epaulets, jewels on shoulders were a feature piece.

The apron look to bring out the little girl is us is new. Chiffon was layered over shorts/skirts by Armani and Westwood. I can see this taking off.

Hemlines are tailored to the individual with long, short and mid length all being shown. Flats are back. Marc Jacobs evidenced this by having no heels featured in any of his runway shows. Chanel brought the clog back, personally didn’t like it but can see its place.

Necklaces were a treasure chest where silver and gold were mixed with tulle, pearl and even denim.

Socks with heels caught me off guard, definitely, not a great look!! You might be able to get away with it if you’re on the Armani or Burberry runway – even though there will be those fashionistas attempting to pull it off – my advice, leave that one in Europe!

Make up was natural by day and polished by night, more plaits and ponytails than straight and slick looks.

So my advice for Spring Summer 2010, find less stylish pieces that say more about who you are and what you want to be. If you can wear florals go forth and wear proudly, if you are like me and prefer more neutral plain colours, you’re going to be in heaven! Draping/ruffles/layered fabrics – are yours to interpret… Don't be swayed by seasonal colours, find out what works for you and create your own look.

Quality over quantity is definitely the key!
