It’s about time the GC gave us shopaholics and style loving, fashion blooded women somewhere to do our bit to help pump up the economy... And with the opening of Robina Town Centre's 300 boutique and specialty retail stores earlier this year and the official opening of Marina Mirage last night - Ladies and Gents, your GC shopping and styling heaven experience awaits you!!!

I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve been looking forward to the Grand opening of Marina Mirage since I received the invitation.... Natalie Gruzlewski (Marina Mirage's Ambassador) looked amazing (as always) and there was a buzz in the air as ladies wandered around with champagne in one hand, canapes in another - with the credit card at close proximity to check out the latest fashions.

There were 3 parades - the first casual elegance showcasing Sunburn, French Connection, Lorna Jane, Side Street and Witchery the second men’s style featuring Gant, Tommy Bahama, John Forsyth For Men, Upper Deck, Mandate, Rodd & Gunn and the third, my favourite of the night - high fashion - Little Joe, Carla Zampatti, Zimmerman, Charlie Brown, and Christensen Copenhagen. I must say I’m quite partial to Carla Zampatti’s elegance and classic look, she does it so well.

I don't know about you but I get excited at the thought of going shopping and seeing who's doing what - I really was born to shop ...the only problem is at the end of the month when that dreaded credit card statement comes in the mail and you look at it in detail and think no......I couldn't possibly have, how did I end up spending?.....So when Monday morning comes it's easier to get over the Mondayitis knowing its all for a good cause...to allow us to support the economy.

So, as you've probably realised this is my first blog for myGC.com and I thrilled to be able to bring you each week the latest and greatest of everything FASHION on the GC !!! Who's doing what in the Industry, fashion events, where to grab a bargain, latest trends, hot looks, styling tips and much much more.

If you have anything that you think might be of interest drop me a line at michelle@thefashionplayground.com.

Last but not least for those of you that are about to embark on school holidays and wondering what to do with your precious little ones ... Robina Town Centre is running Girl Studio Fashion and Beauty workshops from Wed 23rd - Friday 25th Sept at 10pm and 1pm daily. For more info check out www.robinatowncentre.com.au or visit the Customer Service Centre on the ground floor.

Till next week Happy Shopping.....
Michelle.

How much does good customer service influence your shopping experience?

I must say since I moved to the Gold Coast just over 12 months ago, I have received and continue to receive the most amazing customer service from the girls at Witchery in Pac Fair. Ok, so by now they know when I walk in the door I’m there to support their daily sales figures, but they just go that extra length especially when foot traffic at Pac Fair must be down. I didn’t mention Pac Fair last blog when I was talking about shopping destinations on the GC because unfortunately the beloved Pac Fair is in desperate need of a makeover, but with the only Myer on the Coast, I keep going back, but they are definitely behind the 8 ball now when it comes to what Robina has to offer. I have actually heard on the grapevine that Pac Fair are getting some much loved $$$ spent on them early next year, which is long overdue. Even if that dusty apricot pink is now coming back into fashion - there is nothing like a fresh coat of paint on your walls. It will be very interesting to then see what new brands they attract.

Sportsgirl are doing some great pieces lately. My favourite is their DB boyfriend Jacket, not cheap at $169.95 but is a great Classic Piece and a must have with a white Tee and black skinny jeans. Every time I wear mine people always ask where it's from.

I can’t believe I nearly forgot to mention the SALES on at the moment. For those of you stuck behind desks at work, get up out of your desk and add to those 10000 steps a day we are all suppose to be taking, because everyone is on SALE at the moment!!! DJ’s has from 30% - 50% off, Witchery 50 % off. There are sale racks in just about every store, so it’s a great chance to grab some bargains!

What are you waiting for?

There is no better place than to spend the first Sunday morning of every month than at the TVM. If you’re asking “what on earth is TVM?” Well it’s “The Village Markets”. They’re the Gold Coast’s best fashion markets which are held at Burleigh Public School. Gates open at 7am for stall holders and 8am for fashionista’s wanting to check out pre-loved, ex-samples and individual creative’s latest fashions “must haves!”.

Karma clothing tie-dye Maxi dresses are hot and an awesome addition to everyone’s wardrobe. At only $40 each, a great buy! Check out thevillagemarketsgc.com.au for all the latest info on the markets.

With spring in the air, there are so many wonderful new feminine pieces coming our way….and yes its all about the woman this spring /summer, so flaunt those feminine curves and beautiful bodies… I must say though that although the mini is making a comeback, I do draw the line with minis at women who really shouldn’t be wearing them. Don’t get me wrong I support women of all shapes and sizes but some things are not made to be worn by everyone.

I love nothing more than styling many of my clients and helping them choose outfits to compliment their unique and beautiful bodies but please please don’t be fooled just because they say the mini is back, it doesn’t mean it’s for you! Dress for your own body shape – and if you’re not sure what suits you back, book an appointment with a personal stylist (Robina is where you can find me) at your closest fashion destination and seek their assistance after all - you have no hesitation in going to the Doc’s when you’re not feeling well, so why shouldn’t you seek the assistance of a stylist when you don’t feel good in your clothes???

Last week when I was at Robina, I decided to check out a few stores that I don’t normally visit - Autograph and City Chic. I had an inkling that these stores were for women with fuller figures, but really had no idea. When I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised that they had some really good pieces, not to mention their new swimwear range for women. So woman with fuller figures, the excuses of not being able to find anything stylish and funky are gone.  If you are a woman who is usually a size 14 – 30, go check them out. Autograph is usually a more casual attire and City Chic, 2 doors up, has more night-time attire for the ladies (s 14 – 28). I’m talking strapless dresses, sequin tops, even a couple of jumpsuits, jeans – and yes nice normal jeans, not all of had bling on them.

Obviously writing this blog, it’s no secret that I love everything FASHION, even though it certainly does have many interpretations. Lately, I’ve had a few people ask me the difference between Fashion and Style. As the icon of Style and Fashion Coco Chanel once said “Fashion Fades but style remains”, really sums it up. Fashion comes and goes, usually lasting about 3 – 6 months, whereas style… lasts a lifetime. I’m sure you’ve all heard the old 80/20 rule – 80% of your wardrobe should be stylish classic pieces that will last and last and 20% should be the latest fashion pieces to mix with those classic stylish pieces. It’s a great rule to think of when adding pieces to your wardrobe too. By all means run out and grab the latest must have’s (retail therapy is great (in moderation!) but don’t go overboard because that means you are continuously going to have to update your wardrobe every few months and let’s face it as much as we would all love to do that, it’s not really financially viable now is it?

Speaking of updating your wardrobes – as the sales start to wrap up, there is an abundance of new summer stock arriving – Zimmerman has caught my eye with their Bittersweet concertina T dress at AUD$ 275.00 – not cheap, but worth the $$. It’s a Grey marle t-dress with concertina printed silk front panel. Cotton/silk. Definitely a Dry clean only item. Check out Zimmerman at their concept store Marina Mirage, The Designer Forum @ Robina, David Jones and Adrenalin @ Southport or if you’re too busy to pop out most retailers are online this day… zimmermanstore.com or mycatwalk.com.au

As always happy shopping

Ok so it’s not exactly GC News, but the two crazy English women Trinny and Susannah have hit Australia and are in Brissy Westfield Shopping Centres this Sunday.  They are at Clarindale at 11am Chermside at 3pm. I’m heading up to see what the fuss is all about, but don’t have my hopes up after seeing the outfits they put together on the Today show yesterday morning. I love the way they inspire women to be more confident – don’t get me wrong, but seriously, they do bring an alternate meaning to the word style…

More on the T & S experience Monday!!!

The Countdown is on to Melb Cup …the Race That Stops the Nation!!!!

For those that are lucky enough to have a function at work or have a client taking you out – I hope you have your outfits just about ready, because let me tell you - fascinators are a rarity at least 2 weeks out to the race!!! My golden rule – Be prepared!!!!  A few tips…

1.     Keep your assets away. Whilst it may be appropriate to flaunt your stuff at the beach, the races are definitely not the place. The races are your chance however to flaunt that style goddess sitting within. Conservative and Classic are always the best way to go and don’t forget a touch of femininity, seriously no matter what they say, the guys love it when we look like women.

2.     Dress for comfort. Although those killer heels may look amazing, go for a mid height heel as there is nothing worse than your feet aching. Worse cases if you simply can’t do without those heels, pack a pair of ballet flats in your bag.

3.     Speaking of bags, whilst clutches are great if you have sensible shoes on, if you’re needing to take a pair of flats with you, don’t oversize the bag. Oversized bags are hot, don’t get me wrong, but not for race day!

4.     Makeup – Keep it fresh, natural and simple.  Ula natural is best. If you haven’t discovered mineral makeup yet, try and get your hands on some. There are many varieties out there; my fav is ID from NY – available at Myer and DJ’s. Otherwise pop along to your local Priceline store.

5.     Jewellery – Do not over accessorise!!! Hoop earrings, oh, SO not for the races, girls. A nice simple drop earring or stud is much more appropriate and less likely to get caught on anything!!! Mimco has some divine jewellery, but if you’re on a budget Diva and Sportsgirl are the way to go.

If you still don’t have any idea what to wear, book an apt with a stylist at your local shopping centre – Robina or Pac Fair, but get in quick. And don’t assume you have to fork out a fortune for a new outfit, stylists’ work within whatever budget you set.
If you’ve got it going on, I look forward to seeing you on the Best Dressed parade, some of the best looks are born out of eclectic individuality – but the golden rule…. don’t over do it.

Now, just finally, for those that are yet to decide on what to do, my 2 best picks are:

1.     The Gold Coast Turf Club  – check out everything going on… you will feel like you are trackside at Flemmington. www.goldcoastturf.com.au

2.     Adrenalin (Australia Fair) are also putting on a Melb Cup Fashion Parade and lunch, at Spendlove, Ferry Rd Markets. Tickets available from Spendlove, Adrenalin @ Southport or by calling Adrenalin on 07 55916355.

Well the verdict is in; it’s time to go… Trinny & Susannah! …Literally, it was!

I made the trek up to Chermside yesterday afternoon (a good hour and a ¼) with a friend to give these ladies the opportunity to razzle dazzle me. As much as I hate to say it, I left disillusioned and a quite disappointed.

The MC of the afternoon was Jane from MMM in Brisbane (I think?). Jane kept the crowds entertained whilst we waited for the glamour queens to arrive; yes they were fashionably late (it was about the only fashionable aspect of the afternoon).
Jane promoted the girls latest books encouraging the crowd to pop down to Boarders to grab the latest copies whilst we were waiting. We were told because it was their last show,  they were not in a hurry to leave, and would be happy to wait around and sign autographs and have photo’s… which was the case for about 4 minutes -  until their posse rustled the ladies together and said “Come on, we have to get to the airport for our flight back to London” With that, they signed a couple more autographs on their way out and ‘POOF!’ they were whisked away, leaving many disappointed fans that had gone to buy their new book lost for words. I was tempted to sign on their behalf and introduce myself and offer my services, but having just come from the Coolangatta Gold, thought I better not!

As I said last week, don’t get me wrong - I am all for women encouraging women to get out there and dress with style, show off their assets / bodies (when appropriate), boost confidence and make women feel terrific about themselves  - but I’m not a fan of T & S grabbing other ladies boobs on stage (clearly making some of them feel most uncomfortable). I also draw the line at the numerous times the word “shit’ and “pissed” were used, especially when there were many impressionable young women in the crowd. If you missed catching them on their Aussie tour, you can feel like you were there by reading their blog at trinnyandsusannah.com - you’ll understand exactly what I mean!

On behalf of all the fashion loving, stylish women in Australia, I apologise because I really do not think they showcased the best of what fashion in Australia (let alone Westfield) has to offer.
And to that woman in the Indigo dress - who clearly couldn’t believe what they had put her in, I hope you are ok - you looked lovely in your jeans and cream cami beforehand.

Come on Aussie women, surely we don’t need these 2 English ladies to tell us how to dress, let’s look in our own back yard and all the wonderful styling talent we have here. It is easy to turn a woman who has popped out to the shopping centre in her glad rags into Cinderella - how many women go to shopping centres looking like they are on their way to the races or a ball??? It would have been much more beneficial to have talked to the audience about the casual attire they can wear everyday that will suit their bodies not about a one off outfit they can wear if and when they have the chance.

Ok, I’ve ranted enough, sorry had to get that off my chest – I never like finishing all fired up, so on a great note, go grab the latest copy of Madison Mag – haven’t read it in a while and was blown away – read it cover to cover. It’s all about your body, colour, Fashion Magic and the note from the Editor says it all. Well done Madison – Great Issue!

Till next time

I know I did a blog about 'Fashion for Everyone' a couple of weeks ago, but the issue about fashion and size is just so hot right now that I can’t really ignore it.

This week on A Current Affair, you might have seen the segment on large people unable to find boutique/designer labels in their size. I found it contradictory that on one hand here are people saying how happy they were being larger and the size they are, yet complaining that there are no designer labels in their size??? That just doesn’t quite sit with me, how can you be happy about your size yet frustrated that because of your size certain labels you like don’t fit??? I think these people need to understand that fashion caters for the average size body, which these days is a size 10-12 women and a size 34 for men.  To blame designers for not catering for them and attacking the fashion industry for being discriminatory is a little far fetched. Perhaps these guys just need to do their research and go visit the stores that are doing plus sizes labels well ie: Autograph, City Chic or consult people who may be able to assist them and point them in the right direction rather than running straight to ACA.

While we are talking about size though, the other issue is how frustrating it is when you a 6 in one store, a 10 in another label and then a 14 in another…what has happened to sizing consistency????? If you’re anything like me, I need to try everything on before I buy it. I have some friends that buy everything online, even $400 designer dresses!?!? Personally unless I knew the designer and how their clothes fit, Id never spend $400 on a dress that wasn’t at least guaranteed to make me look like Jennifer Aniston.

But back to size for a minute, lets face it – we all come in different shapes and sizes and thank goodness for it because it would be one boring place if we all had the same shape and everyone looked the same. I love nothing more than meeting a client who says they dislike their body and within a couple of hours, we have re-educated them on how to dress and all of a sudden bam they now feel fantastic!!!

So embrace yourselves ladies and gents, there are clothes out there for all of us. Sure stick to the sizes for a rough guideline, but when hitting the change room, there is no problem taking in 2 or 3 sizes or asking the sales assistants for a larger or smaller size.  Please don’t not buy something because it says it’s a 14 but makes you look beautiful and classy and fits you like a glove. If you are paranoid, once you get home, unpick the label but I urge you, my fellow gorgeous style loving friends, don’t be driven by the size of a label!!!!!

Well its official, whilst Coco Chanel can hold the title of “I don't do fashion, I am fashion”, sadly we cannot say the same for many race goers at Melbourne cup this year. Whilst there were many spectacular outfits - one of my fav being Jen Hawkins (dressed by Toni Maticevski) and Esther Anderson (who plays Charlie on Home and Away) dressed by a Stylist at Ch 7 and wearing Carla Zampatti (one of my most favourite of favourite designers, along with her daughter Bianca Spender), there were many who clearly don't understand the difference between dressing for the races and a Saturday night out!!

As the Spring Carnival draws to a close and Milliners can start to get some sleep, the focus now turns to Christmas. Can you believe its only 7 weeks away?? Before Christmas though, comes all those wonderful Chrissy Parties....what to wear I hear you ask? Depending on the occasion will naturally depend but classy, casual and natural is my 2 cents...

If you want some advice, drop me a line michelle@thefashionplayground.com - always happy to assist.

So, since Ive started writing these blogs, my husband said to me the other day what about writing one for the guys??? I can’t believe I have completely neglected the male species in my blogs till now – how could I - Especially when I have male clients. I guess I sometimes forget and get carried away writing about women, because come on lets face it, women and fashion are usually side by side each other in every sentence, so next week I will start my ode to the male fashionista with some trends for the males and how guys can get an edge on what they are wearing. I will quickly mention Witchery Man at Robina – was out there yesterday its like a little injection of Melb into the GC, its great, if you haven’t checked it out, pop out there, you won't be disappointed!

Till next time

Im in love! On the weekend I discovered a new fashion label, well not exactly new, but new to me!!! I read about Mela Purdie in the Financial Review earlier this month. Mela actually started her label in 2001 when she saw a niche in the market for clothes that were stylish and able to travel, hence her line being called “Clothes that travel with you”.

So, on the weekend I was delightfully surprised as I wandered down James St in Burleigh to come across an injection of her collection in Carmels. Classic, casual but oh-so stylish jersey! Every piece I put on like her website says are designed to skim not cling, really created a slimming line!!! I was thinking, "I’ll have one of everything, in every colour", until I looked at the price – not cheap but definitely worth spending the $ on, as the quality was amazing. Subtle neutrals are her choice of colours, perfect in my opinion. She is so on the money with her label!

Check out  her range at Mela Purdie – www.melapurdie.com - with several boutiques on the Coast from Currumbin to Southport stocking her label!

I popped down to Sydney for the night on Tuesday to preview the best of the Spring/Summer ready to wear 2010 collections from Milan, NY, Paris and London at the Fashion Group’s International Fashion Flash - a 50 minute DVD presentation.
I always love seeing what the other side of the world is doing – what outrageous fashions they showcase and then forecast what will and what won’t be a hit in Australia.
It was “fashion as you liked it” and for the workforce. Suits taking a more relaxed approach as the line between fashion and corporate became more blurred. Denim went from the farming and mining communities to the runway. Epaulets are back, White is white hot, the security of pure colours seem to mean that designers are seeking security in neutral colours – sand/beige/camel are going to be huge!

Other colours to look out for are:

Lemon, orange (burnt and bright), aqua, silver and of course ye old faithful… black. Valentino surprised many with no red this season.
The intimacy of apparel was no longer with underwear being worn on the outside as shown by Karl Lagerfeld.

Leather made an appearance in the form of cropped jumpsuits and jackets, questionable whether suitable for all climates, let alone bodies!!

Asymmetry – where “2 sides agreed to disagree” were featured as did the folded origami geometric style by Jason Wu. My pick will be the continued used of draping and gathered materials. The craftsmanship was truly exquisite – Vera Wang and Givenchy creating some to die for garments that just fell endlessly over the silhouette creating a relaxed comfortable look that would take you anywhere. Bunching by Vivienne Westwood complemented the ruffle, which brought a soft comparison to the asymmetry and origami style pieces. Erin Wasson wore gorgeous frayed shorts in natural cotton – natural fibers definitely on the rise.

Prints also got a look in (although did nothing for me, they were a little too busy). The stripe still very much maintains its presence as is animal print showcased by Louis Vuitton - I do however think animal print has had its time in Australia.  Armani and D&G loved the florals. Printed silk fabrics were delicious – obviously depending on the print!  The shoulder is not as broad as last season but is definitely still visible. Epaulets, jewels on shoulders were a feature piece.

The apron look to bring out the little girl is us is new. Chiffon was layered over shorts/skirts by Armani and Westwood. I can see this taking off.

Hemlines are tailored to the individual with long, short and mid length all being shown. Flats are back. Marc Jacobs evidenced this by having no heels featured in any of his runway shows. Chanel brought the clog back, personally didn’t like it but can see its place.

Necklaces were a treasure chest where silver and gold were mixed with tulle, pearl and even denim.

Socks with heels caught me off guard, definitely, not a great look!! You might be able to get away with it if you’re on the Armani or Burberry runway – even though there will be those fashionistas attempting to pull it off – my advice, leave that one in Europe!

Make up was natural by day and polished by night, more plaits and ponytails than straight and slick looks.

So my advice for Spring Summer 2010, find less stylish pieces that say more about who you are and what you want to be. If you can wear florals go forth and wear proudly, if you are like me and prefer more neutral plain colours, you’re going to be in heaven! Draping/ruffles/layered fabrics – are yours to interpret… Don't be swayed by seasonal colours, find out what works for you and create your own look.

Quality over quantity is definitely the key!

Apologies for no love last week, I was tucked up in hospital having one of the smallest, most useless but most incredibly painful parts of my body removed. Yes my appendix, the one I wished and wished would have burst when I was 15 (so I could have had a week off school) finally decided it was time. My husband was away, and I was home alone, so hey why not?

Needless to say, hospital is definitely not a place for fashion!! I’d love to know the reason for those tissue paper like undies - and why they are still in existence? Surely there is nothing wrong with 100% cotton being worn?

So, I’m out of hospital, not back at work, but taking it easy. Yes, I AM actually taking it easy. I’m enjoying the change of pace, catching up on reading and not doing a lot. Funny how your body slows you down sometimes isn't it?
I must admit, I’m not missing being part of the crowds that are currently buzzing round the shops pre-chrissy.

Anyway - In a world made for the consumer how does one resist so many wonderful pieces of clothing that tempt us every single day? Perhaps it’s easier for those that aren’t confronted with the latest and greatest of what’s in store every day, but for me it’s been a long and challenging process learning how to shop smartly and that quality over quantity is the key! Less really is more!

Many of my clients have astounded me with how many of their clothes they actually don’t wear. I’m serious! They have a HUGE section of their wardrobe with clothes that still have tags attached and a small section in the corner that they wear frequently. What’s funny is how quickly they are prepared to get rid of the clothes with tags still attached and how good they feel when they are gone. We actually totaled the price of clothes (with tags still attached). You will never believe the amount $3127. Need I say more!?

As the silly sales season approaches, think twice before buying something just because it is on sale. Ok if it’s a Carla Zampatti, Mela Purdie or Ginger & Smart piece dramatically reduced, you have my blessing, but make sure it still fits you and you look and feel amazing in it!

Each one of us expresses our style through our appearance every day. What’s your style? Finding your style might help you spend your hard earned money wisely and end up with less impulse purchases and more lifelong purchases that you love.

Next week I’ll help you find your style!

By the way just quickly I learnt this week that Mela Purdie started her career with Carla Zampatti. Goes to show why she’s creating such beautiful garments, having worked with one of the best, doesn’t it?

Till next week, stay wise – and I promise it feels much better to leave that impulse purchase in the store and come home with money still in your wallet than another dress or top that doesn’t make you look like Jennifer Aniston!

Style is such an individual thing. It is the expression of your personality through your appearance.

For me personally, my wardrobe is an eclectic mix of everything! And I just love it!  Depending on how I feel really does depend on what I wear.

If someone asked me what my style was I'd say classic with an eclectic edge – I'd love to say I can pull of the natural look and perhaps some days I can, but it wouldn’t be without my mineral make up (love the natural look with a little bit of help).  For any semi-formal or cocktail events I'm pretty much always top to toe Carla. Her dresses last a lifetime and I splurge on one every year!

So back to styles, there tends to be several distinct groups these days:

Dramatic/Eclectic – A person dressing with a dramatic or eclectic style often wants to be different from everyone else. They wear individual pieces that makes them feel they are making a statement about who they are or how they feeling.  They usually feature defined eye makeup to accentuate their features.

For an eclectic / dramatic look follow your heart and keep you eye out for pieces that grab your attention. Charlie Brown has done some great tulle and ruffle pieces, Sass and Bide also have some great dresses at the moment, Ksubi does very ksubi things, Camilla and even Cue have some edgy funky dresses and tops.

Elegant – Elegant dresses tend to fill the room with their presence when they enter. Their look is polished, clean; make up is relatively conservative and a neutral palette. If you want an elegant look try Anthea Crawford or Carla Zampatti.

Natural – A natural woman is able to throw on pretty much anything and look good. They wear minimal makeup, perhaps a hint of mascara or lippy. They tend to wear clothes they are comfortable in with simple and minimal jewelry. To achieve a natural look check out Bassike and plainer pieces in general.

Classic – The classic look is my favourite look. It never goes out of style! Any woman wanting a classic style first must start with a great basic wardrobe that can be built on year after year. The beauty of having a classic style is that you can stray to other styles whenever you want and know the trusty classic is waiting for you when you are ready to come back to it. Country Road, Sportscraft, David Lawrence and Mela Purdie are renown for their classic style. Depending on your age will also depend on where you look for classic pieces.

Confused – Most of my clients fit into this category (hence why I was born). There is absolutely nothing wrong with admiring how others dress yet not knowing where to buy and how to put outfits together.

Like I said earlier on, your style is your own individuality. Embrace it. Dress how you feel comfortable and make sure you feel great in whatever you wear!!! A wise mentor of mine once said: if you look good, you feel good, if you feel good, you will achieve great things!!! How true she was!!! And don't forget to rotate your wardrobe!

If in doubt, give me a call, I am always happy to help out!

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and have your outfits ready and rearing to go for New Year’s Eve!!!

As 2009 draws to a close and 2010 is lurking around the corner, what is your wardrobe going to say about you in 2010?

We all have clothes in our wardrobe taking up precious space. Clothes that no longer fit (because they shrunk of course!), clothes we may have been given as a gift (??) or many many impulse buys that at the time of purchase we simply couldn’t live without, although we since have…sound familiar?

So in 2010 I challenge you to be a savvy shopper and kick start the year with a wardrobe detox. Yep that’s right, throw out all those clothes that you didn’t wear in 2009. If you simply can’t bear the thought of parting with something, then space bag it up and leave beautiful space in your wardrobe!

So my wish for you in 2010 is to keep it simple, make this the year of a new you. Find your style and if you want a little help, engage a personal stylist!! Long gone are the days of Personal Stylists just being for a celebrity. They are for everyone!!! One of my favourite clients is a 60+ foster mother of 4! She is just fantastic.  She hadn’t received a compliment in years and since her new look, has been showered with compliments. She no longer stresses over what to wear every morning and she says she always feels great!!! Nothing makes me happier than happy clients! I love it!

Well, I don't know about you, but I am hanging for an injection of new fashion to hit the retail stores. Don’t get me wrong, not that I have the $ to do so after Christmas and having my appendix out… Sales are great but after about a month of them, the stock levels start to dwindle and you get a bit sick of seeing the same old stuff not in your size. I’ve been holding off revisiting the shops the last couple of weeks, because usually come the 2nd-3rd week of Jan retailers start showcasing new seasons goodies! Yah!!! So its full steam ahead on the saving wagon for me.

So, what does one fashion and styleaholic do whilst sales are winding up? As easy as it would be to replace my shopping habit with another form of habit, I think I've consumed my fair share of wine this year…already!! For me it’s all about reading and researching and getting ready for 2010! I’m always looking to see who is doing what, what direction brands are taking this year – I love a bit of inside news as to what inspiration some companies are drawing on and the colour palettes they will be focusing their range on…if only I could spill the beans, Id love too, really I would, but I have to stay tight lipped for now. All I can say is that I’m excited, as excited as good old Big Kev use to get!

Fashions are however very much alive and afloat with Magic Millions on the Gold Coast last week and Girls Day out on Sat. I must say I enjoyed sifting through the fashions and seeing the spectacular and some rather interesting outfits. A HUGE congratulations to the woman who took out the Best Classic Race wear Category – Natalie Letford, she truly was Audrey Hepburn reincarnated. She looked so classy and elegant. To view more on the fashions at Magic Millions visit goldcoastturf.com.au.

It's always nice when you meet a designer whose clothes you admire and love. Today I was in the right place at the right time.

I popped into Myer ever so quickly because my urge to see whether new stock was starting to filter in overcome me and I wandered over to Charlie Brown to see what delicious new materials were being ruffled and bunched only to my delight to see Charlie herself.

I was fortunate that one of my favourite sales assistants was on and introduced me to her. She’s just fantastic. Vivacious, inspiring and passionate. I was talking to her about how I loved how the range has diversified and their use of more ruffles and frills has been just fantastic - I am very much a ruffles and frill type woman, they're so fun! She said she has got a great team behind her (which I thought was just lovely) and clearly she does. I had a sneak peak at some of the new winter stock that the girls were unpacking and whilst we are not quite ready for the long sleeves yet, get in quick there are limited sizes and between you and me, it's good, really good! Some of her best pieces yet.

Summer stock is also reduced to clear, so if you had your eye on anything but couldn't find room in the budget it's worth checking out whether they have what you want in your size.

It's exciting, the new seasons stock is starting to trickle in - everywhere I looked I could see injections of new things, breathe Michelle, just breathe!

Happy shopping days ahead x

When it comes to fashion and style, they are only 2 of the ingredients when it comes to our overall image and feeling great! As much as we love them both, you are never quite able to carry off any outfit or image with confidence if  you don’t feel your hair is quite right. Trust me, I have been battling this for almost the last 12 months!!! Last week, I discovered a hidden gem on the Gold Coast. An oasis. A Sanctuary. A sensory delight! As much as I’d love to keep it to myself, I'm going to share it with you because after all, there is nothing better than feeling beautiful, being pampered, having your hair a colour you love.

Lattouf, which probably should be French for pampering is your next destination to be totally indulged. They are tucked away in the Marriott hotel in Surfers Paradise and whilst I know many people might not want to battle the congested streets of Surfers, let me tell you, it's well well worth it. Perhaps don’t make a booking for late Saturday afternoon as I did, esp before a national public holiday (as all the revelers were getting ready for pre pre Australia Day celebrations), but whatever you do… treat yourself and make a booking. Stephen Lattouf is the man behind these Salons, which are located in both Sydney and lucky for us, the GC.  Lattouf uses Aveda products, free of chemicals and animal ingredients and organic plant and flower essences. Give the Spa Manager Christine a call on 1300 36 37 37 to make an apt or visit www.lattouf.com.au to try and decide how to spoil yourself.

I promise you will be thanking me!!!

'Chic', 'Parisian', 'trendy', 'rock inspired', 'stylish', 'elegant', 'I love', and 'must-haves' are the words that consume my head after I unwrapped the latest Country Road Catalogue. It’s been a while since I’ve loved pretty much every piece in their range. The shoot showcasing their latest range was simple, clean, chic, original and inspiring. Thank god for layby and cardholders discounts is all I can say.

They have kept their core basics which as usual fit like a glove, white short and long sleeve tee’s, tank singlet tops and grey marl tops, perfect to throw on when you want to look casual but still stylish.

If you’re not a CR card holder and haven’t seen their latest and greatest, head to your nearest store and see what I am talking about! Be quick, its not going to last long.

Great work CR!

You know what I love about fashion; there is always something for everyone! Earlier this week, I discovered a special place just north of Surfers in Tedder Avenue called Pandora’s Temptation. Like Pandora’s box, there are many unexpected temptations inside. Dresses made from beautiful fabrics all the way from Brussels in some magnificent colours, all colours of the rainbow, really beautiful colours. Pandora’s Temptation is the baby of Designer Pandora Lemonis. Pandora’s designs are storming the International Market in Europe and the USA. Pandora thoughts on her range…

“My latest range includes beautiful dresses for the party season. Ladies can now shine in the romance of glamorous parties. My dresses are captivating and create an elegance and mystery in any setting.  Women are meant to be mysterious, glamorous and alluring, my designer dresses reflect these qualities. I use magnificent silks to enhance and illuminate each woman. The fabrics are so light they feel beautiful against your skin.”

Having designed dresses that featured on the hit US series Beverly Hills 90210; Pandora is set to make her mark on Tedder Ave, Main Beach. Pandora’s dresses usually priced between $200 - $800 BUT are on special this week for Valentines Day at the ridiculous price of $99. Ladies, although you may not have a need for a dress right now, pop on down and check out the magnificent colours and fabrics and grab yourself a BARGIN for that special occasion that you don’t know you have coming up!   Pandora also has the latest Electra Bikes from the USA for both men and women, why not I say?. Pandora’s Temptation is open Tuesday – Sunday. See her current collection on line at www.pandorastemptation.com.

Wear her temptation and see who you become…

Last Week, I popped down to Sydney for Fashion Exposed. Australasia's premier trade fashion event, FASHION EXPOSED celebrated 20 seasons of FASHION in Feb at the Sydney Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour.

There were over 1500+ new ranges in womenswear, menswear, childrenswear, streetwear and so much more.

For the first time in Sydney, FASHION EXPOSED & preview joined forces with the Australian Shoe Fair and the Bags and Accessories Fair, which made it the most comprehensive fashion event on the buying calendar.

A quick snapshot of some of my favourite discoveries…

Made Right Here – a brand new concept-making baby and kids clothes right here in Australia. As they say “ Living proof that it is possible to make high quality, reasonably priced beautiful childrens clothing right here in Australia for our most precious asset…. Australian kids”. Yep that pretty much sums it up. I can’t wait to have munchkins to dress them in it!!! Maderighthere.com.au for more info!

Wrapture – a Byron Bay ingenious concept of Sustainable textiles handcrafted with integrity. They are the most beautiful naturally dyed products I have ever seen. The silk used was truly magnificent as was the age old techniques of gathering leaves and flowers from their local environment either placing them in pots or scattering them lovingly on silk or fine wool with the foliage giving hues and depths that mirror seasons. Maxi Dresses, short and long caftans, scarves and even artwork. If you are in Byron, you must go check out their studio, their pieces are truly unique and so so beautiful. For contact details, please email me.

Bodypeace - also from our beloved Byron bay is Bamboo bodywear Its awesome, great for basic wear, resort wear or to exercise / travel in. It truly was so luxurious without the hefty price tag!!! Bodypeace is the baby of Anna Walsh whom after over a decade in retail decided she wanted to design fashion that looked great and also helped the planet. It was then she discovered that you could make clothes out of bamboo! Dare I say it’s a Bamboo version of Mela Purdie, so clearly those who know what I think of Mela Purdie will know that this range definitely caught my eye!! You can view the range at bodypeacebyron.com or give Anna a call. She is just lovely.

Spare Soles – Stylish comfort for your feet. Spare Footwear for your feet, when your feet have had enough but you haven’t. They are compact, hygienic and will fit in your handbag so there is no more barefoot walking after you’ve had enough of those heels!!! They come in a great range of colours and with different soles depending on what surface you require to wear them on. To check them out log onto sparesoles.com.au.

Eternal Safari and Sebastians sister – definitely a stand out when it comes to fashion that is stylish and has a point of difference. These guys get draping and how to use material. Whilst I didn’t get a chance to chat to them, because it was hard to get close with all the people around, I loved what I saw and will definitely be following up with them!!! Myspace.com/sebastians.eternalsafari

Conform and Comply – from our little friends across the Pacific Ocean in NZ, this was the best range of objects to hold things!!! Truly luxurious and unique. Soft Marino felt in weekend bags, day bags, and laptop bags. If you want to stand out and care about how you carry your beloved possessions, seriously you need to be decked out in everything they have!!! I’m hooked, now I just have to find out where to purchase in OZ!!!

If you are a retailer and wanting to add some accessories to your store, check out Majique (www.majique.com.au). They supply only to those in the trade but have some seriously cool and individual accessories that would compliment any outfit. Pearls, eclectic leather pieces with zips/ studs, costume jewlrey, Hmm I might even sell them myself!!!

And last but by definitely no means least…

Heel Candy– I always love knickknacks and accessories. Although I’m not always a heel person, I must say for those that love their heals, you need to get these!!! Heel Candy are Heel covers that prolong the life of your favourite heels, and stop that sinking into the ground feeling… hello?? Sheer brilliance if you ask me!! They are perfect for weddings, the races, polo, garden parties pretty much any outdoor event!!! For retailers, grab a carton and pop it on your counter as an add on because these little beauties will be in demand!!! The official launch party is late march. For more info visit www.heelcandy.com.au

Well don’t know about you but i am exhausted, even though I had so much fun, it was one massive trade show with many more wonderful brands that if only I could mention them all. For more info on Fashion Exposed. Check out Fashionexposed.com.au. Next trade show is August 29,30 and 31 in Melbourne.

What a busy week last week was! Friday, I had the pleasure of being invited to assist with the judging of the submissions of “The Next Big Thing in Fashion” at Sanctuary Cove. What a hard task it was! There were some amazing entries, which made choosing 6 finalists quite tough. Entries included swimwear, children’s wear, bridal, couture and womenswear fashion. The “Next Big Thing in Fashion” is a Gold Coast Competition designed to provide an opportunity for student and emerging designers to promote their labels to the general public and be the “Next Big Thing in Fashion.”

The 6 finalists who will be announced in tomorrow’s GC Bulletin have the opportunity to sell their designers in a “GROUP SPACE” at Sanctuary Cove Marine Village for 3 weeks from the 9th to the 27th March.

Finalists will then have the opportunity to present their collections during a dinner event at Sanctuary Cove on March 27 where the overall winner will be announced - “Next Big Thing in Fashion” presented by Sanctuary Cove.

The winner will be selected from the 6 finalists through a combination of:

·        Public online voting

·        In-store voting

·        Panel vote

The winning label will have sole use of the shop space for the entire month of April.

The winner will also receive:

·        Return airfare from Gold Coast to Melbourne

·        5 nights’ accommodation in Melbourne

·        Booth space at the Fashion Exposed event in Melbourne in August 2010

There is some serious talent on the Coast and with the level of applications received this year, I think its going to become an annual event that will get bigger and bigger each year. For more details check out gcfashionincubator.org.au and grab a copy of todays GC Bulletin.

Bonjur or at this time of the afternoon should I say Selamat Sore. I am sorry for the lack of love over the past 2 weeks, I have been catching up on some much deserved time off with great friends in Bali….such a magical place and might I add, not bad on the shopping front either. To my absolute delight I discovered a new attraction Discovery Mall – the newest home to one of the Gold Coasts much loved Surf Retailers Billabong and……….yes here it comes TOPSHOP….ok now don’t fall off your seat or book a trip there tomorrow because of TOPSHOP, the shop is small and has nothing on the Oxford Streets Flagship store, but it was a nice surprise to discover. A few other local gems popping up here and there too - more on them in the coming weeks.

So, in my absence, the night of nights…OSCARS. I was doing my best to catch glimpses of the wonders and why’s when I could (in between my Passionfruit Caprioscas and $10 massages). So, what did you think about who wore what? The Oscars are a funny night. Interesting that Brangelina chose not to make an appearance. Anyway, my favourites of the night - SJP in classy and classic Chanel Couture,  Sandra Bullock in her Marchesa gown – simply stunning, she certainly has come along way from Speed and Miss Congeniality. Maggie Gyllenhaal took digital print to a new level. Her dress by Dries Van Noten was beautiful. Meryl Streep certainly has aged with so much grace and elegance as has Helen Mirren. Demi more in the apricot neutral hued Atelier Versace also looked sensational!!!

Cameron Diaz, whilst I love embellishment, I think it was a little overdone, she reminded me of one of those golden leaf trees my nan use to have. Jennifer Lopez didn’t do justice to herself, neither did Penelope Cruz. Sigourney Weaver in Lanvin a very Grecian goddess dress - very last year although the strategically placed ribbon around her waist did give a point of distraction to the dress but it certainly wasnt the worst. That certainly had to go to Vera Farmiga in Marchesa?? Sometimes risks do not pay off.

So that was the Oscars for another year….closer to home things are hot hot hotting up. The Winner of the Gold Coast’s Next Big thing in Fashion will be announced on 27th  March at Sanctuary Cove. Prior to that though, I’m off to the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival for the week next week. I Can’t wait. It’s one of my favorite events of the year. The team at LMFF does such an amazing job in getting a wonderful and inspiring calendar of events together.

Oh, one more thing, have you seen the new season stock filling the stores…….Love love love witchery’s new campaign…..Review has also kicked off a new era everywhere you turn they are being featured in editorials and Country Road, still very much up there.

Must fly, Exciting days of fashion lie ahead.

Its not fashion strictly speaking, but given I’m all about where fashion, style and image come together and this definitely falls under image, I want to share with you a newly found love of mine….Arbonne. At first I must admit, I was slightly skeptical and thought it would fall into the Avon “ family”, not that I actually know much about or have ever used Avon, but I was given a sample kit of products to try and my goodness, my skin has never been more radiant…ever! The products are truly amazing. I had 2 people at a function last night in Melbourne compliment me on my skin, I was really flattered. It’s funny because usually I am very much a marketers dream. A big one for how things are packaged, but funnily enough this particular product from the Arbonne range are in orange bottles with gold lids (my 2 least favourite colours), but this time, the product has spoken for itself and I have learnt a very valuable lesson.

I have managed to get my hands on some sample packs to give away to readers, so if you would like to give your skin some love and pamper them with Arbonne products , be one of the first 10 people to contact me at michelle@thefashionplayground.com and beautiful radiant skin will be coming your way. To check out their entire range visit arbonneinternational.com.au. If you wish to place an order I will give you the contact details of the Rep who introduced me to the products, she is great!

Well it certainly was the way to kick off the start of L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2010. Glamour, Style, Inspiration, more Glamour, more style, Beauty, A list celebrities and of course little me – a Party really isn’t a party without me now is it? It was the second year I had the honour of being invited to rub shoulders with the who's who of Australian Fashion together with some inspiring and highly regarded international faces. I had the pleasure of meeting Gabrielle Hackworthy on Sunday night, Editor of Vogue China and Nippon...sensational woman.

The theme was Wonderland. L’Oreal Paris together with Harpers Bazaar and the Australian Ballet brought a Fashion Wonderland to life inside the majestic and purely spectacular grounds of Government House. We were treated to a parade of several masterpieces - Mini Mouse by Sass and Bide (my favourite), Romance was Born’s interpretation of Cruella De Vil in from 101 Dalmatians, Tina Kalivas’s interpretation of Beauty and the Beast, Alice in wonderland by Collette Dinnigan (apparently she is about to release her new range that features the blue tu-tu worn), It's very eclectic but very very cute.

Curve ball, here came Elvis – I must admit one of the best imitators I have seen in years but I didn’t quite get where he slotted into the Wonderland theme but it was nonetheless good fun and had everyone engaged.

The LMFF team did a Phenomenal job.

Highlights from the week so far….so many it’s hard to choose…

Day 1 – The Designers Forum, an afternoon hosted by Gabrielle Hackworthy with Linlee Allen (Writer, Photojournalist and Creative Consultant), Michael Angle (Globally acclaimed Designer) and Tony Glenville (Creative Director at the London College of Fashion, Fashion Commentator, Fashion Journalist and Director) was simply amazing. As inspirational as they come! I came away with ideas flying left right and centre and more inspired than I have ever been before. Thanks guys x.

Day 2 – “Middletons Fashion Law" Breakfast. Middletons are the Fashion Law Experts. For all Fashion Legal needs these guys are the ones you need to talk to. Lisa Egan and Jonathon Feder discussed the legal issues brands are currently facing when doing business online. From how to protect your brand in Australia and Overseas to what you need to be aware about when using Facebook, Twitter, Google and Ebay. Incredibly informative and invaluable advice.

Following their presentation we had a Panel discussion with Fiona Mackintosh from Draggin Jeans and Prue Thomas Strategic Brand Manager from Sportsgirl (yep, best job ever! She’s even worked at Topshop and Selfridges!). She’s incredible. They both discussed the challenges, risks, strategies and successes they faced with various online and social media being used by their respective companies. As I have said before in my opinion Sportsgirl are leading the way with Social Media in regards to brands doing it well, and now…we know why. She is a wealth of knowledge, experience and has a great team that she works with.

It’s a bit tricky trying to keep everyone up to date with what’s going on since my new website unfortunately is not back up and running yet (Rome wasn’t built in a day now was it). Don’t get me wrong, whilst I love mygc.com BLOG and keeping everyone up to date in what’s happening with everything fashion even if it’s not technically on the coast or happening in the coast) make sure you check out the fashion playground on facebook for up to date snippets of where I am and what I’m up to. It was only set up last week, so let’s see how many fans we can get....oh and by the way, for those that know me really well… I found a giant cupcake this morning on my way to the Middletons Breaky, check it out on facebook…it was HUGE!!!! But I resisted the temptation…

Till then, happy days and I will leave you with my most favourite quote of the week so far by Linlee Allen from the LMFF Designer Forum yesterday

“ Just because you’re famous doesn’t mean you’re cool!”. Great chick. She totally rocked. Check out her blog linleeloves.blogspot.com.

It was a night of glamour as I entered the 102.9 Hot Tomato Star Party at Jupiters Hotel & Casino on Friday night behind the gorgeous Hayley Bateup and her partner. Hayley dressed in a short stunning black number with the most fluorescent of Hot Pink heels seemed to strike a remarkable resemblance to the Rock Star P!NK.

Once inside there was every type of fashion imaginable. As I scanned the room one corner looked like a year 12 formal, the other like a nightclub in Surfers – that’s the beauty of Fashion, it is for everyone and it certainly is open to interpretation!!!

I must say Shannon Eckstein and his partner Belinda, Bede Durbidge and his wife and of course the glamorous Ms Bateup and partner all looked gorgeous. Sometimes professional athletes struggle when glaming it up but these guys had it perfected.

For those wanting to rub shoulder with some of Ch 9's most talented there were plenty of opportunities.. Mr Dieter Brummer, Gyton Grantley (aka Carl Williams from underbelly – who might I add looked very handsome) and Peter Phelps.  If only I could mention everyone. My favourite dress of the night was that worn by gorgeous Eva Milic. She has such a simple and natural class about her and looked stunning.

But..…… the man that stole the light (other than Luke Bradman who stripped down to budgie smugglers and a lifesavers red and yellow cap later in the evening as he belted out a couple of tunes) was Mr Warwick Capper. Making a very traditional entrance poking the sky with his fingers….he was the man! Although to my surprise he was sporting a rather different look. No mullet, in fact he presented with freshly bleached foils, manicured and immaculately blow-dried hair – a very different and new look. Check out all the pictures here

Well done to the Hot Tomato and Conrad Jupiter’s team for putting on a Fabulous night. The Marque and entertainment certainly gave Cirque de Soleil a run for their money; the only difference being these were tickets money just couldn’t buy.

The ‘NEXT BIG thing’ in Fashion is…….

It was truly a spectacular evening at Sanctuary Cove on Saturday 27th March at the first ever “NEXT BIG thing” in Fashion event. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement, champagne and magnificently decorated tables as the 360 guests sat by candlelight (in order to support earth hour) and ate a sumptuous 3 course Meal. Throughout the night guests were treated to fire twirling entertainers, music that melted the soul and the fashion parade of the 6 Finalists of the evening’s event.

The GC Fashion Incubator a non-profit industry association that provides a platform for new, student, emerging and established designers to launch and grow their labels was behind the idea of the event. Donna Caley from the Fashion incubator did a phenomenal job in co-coordinating the students and fashions for the night as did Tracey Toovey Marketing Manager from Sanctuary Cove and Simone from shac communications.

The 6 finalists of the night were:

Indigo Joker by Kathryn Edmonds www.indigojoker.com

JANIN by Aneta Rycombel www.janin.com.au

Jemae Australia by Paula Tangredi www.jemae.com.au

JettRoc by Deb Tranter Parkinson www.jetroc.com

KJ by Kevin Heisner www.kjheisner.com.au

Taree.birse by Taree Birse www.tareebirse.com

The finalist’s products were displayed at a retail site in Sanctuary Cove and consumers were able to vote online, in store and on the night. I was honored to be one of the judges in conjunction with Kathy Castens from Katz Management (who also provided the models for the evenings event) and Brad Webb, Brisbane’s finest Bridal designer.

A BIG congratulation to the overall winner of the competition Taree Birse. Taree (among other things) will now have the opportunity to spend a week working with Carla Zampatti in Sydney and will showcase her range at Fashion Exposed in Melbourne in late August.

Given the response and popularity of the event it will sure to be back next year.

The Fashion Incubator is supported by Business GC, the Gold Coast City Council’s Economic Development agency, its members and corporate partnerships.

This blog entry is long long over due – well about 3 weeks to be precise and in my books that’s long enough for fashion trends to change multiple times…however lucky in this instance, I’ve found another gem which will be going no where (I hope) and will remain in the forefront of my wardrobe for many seasons to come….Welcome Lounge Apparel.

Let me fill you in a little on how I came to find out about Lounge. Whilst at the Middletons Fashion Law Breakfast (part of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival), I exchanged smiles with a lady across the room. Noticing how lovely she looked, I complimented her on what she was wearing. Asking what label it was (don’t get me wrong, it’s not the first thing I usually start a conversation with, however it felt as if this woman and I had known each other for years and were simply catching up). To my delight the woman – whose name is Helen Reizer from Two Hands PR Agency (awesome name) looked after the PR / Marketing for Lounge Apparel. Carmen Bianco - the wife of shoe god Tony Bianco, is the talented and dedicated woman behind this simply stylish contemporary label.

Given the heatwave in Melbourne that week (which left me completely unprepared in the Wardrobe Dept) I was absolutely touched when Helen rang me and invited me to pop into the Lounge Showroom and choose an outfit to wear at various events during the week. There began my obsession with Lounge!!! I kid you not every time I have worn the lounge skirt/dress that I chose I have had someone ask me where I got it….so not only am I walking PR for them, it is one of the most loved and prized possessions now in my wardrobe. It travels everywhere with me. To top off the excitement of discovering Lounge, I enquired about stockists and realised that it was stocked at my most favourite boutique in James Street Burleigh “Carmels”. Seriously does life get any better?  Ladies, if you have not discovered Lounge, you are missing out!! Either jump onto their website loungeapparel.com.au or contact me and I will let you know where you nearest stockist is! Prices range from rrp$69 for tops, leggings from rrp$59, skirts from rrp$39 -$229, dresses from rrp$179 -$279, jackets from rrp$229 -$429, cardigans from rrp$149, and pants from rrp$139 -$179. Incredible value. Made from fabrics such as luxe jersey, bamboo silk cottons and 100% merino.  You need this brand in your wardrobe! No questions asked! It will take you everywhere! It’s stylish, luxurious, so wearable and versatile and can take you from day to night.

You know that feeling you got when you were 15 when you were dating the cutest guy at school and you found out he really just wanted to be your friend (and then he started dating your best friend), well that’s how I felt last week when I found out that the Gold Coast City Council had served a “Show Cause” notice on the founders of The Village Markets. I was gutted! What ? Who ? Why ? How? After being in business 18 months?

Gorgeous Marisa and Sarah started the markets back in 2008 and like any savvy business women saw an opportunity to give aspiring designers, vintage and second hand lovers the chance to share Sunday morning together and inspire others about their love of everything fashion. They went and saw the Council back then, who advised them they did not need to lodge a Development Application as the markets were deemed to be on crown land – being owned by the Govt together with the fact it was an irregular event ie 12 times a year (if not rained out).

Shame on Council, not only for giving negligent advice in the first place but also for not having the ability to work with The Village Markets and provide options to resolve the situation. Serving a Show Cause Notice on a community event is really as low as it gets. Don’t get me wrong I know the Council is incredibly supportive of events such as the Next Big thing in Fashion and the GC Fashion Incubator, but guys these markets were driving the local economy, supporting our local talent, providing them with the opportunity to run a small business and encouraging them to pursue their dreams (for some) of starting and running their own label.

Sass and Bide were first discovered at Portabella Road Markets in London. Hello?? Not only do we have more magnificent weather, we have the luxury of living one of the most beautiful coastal lifestyles in the world. So I am urging whoever in Council has the power, and I know you are out there, to please come forth and do the right thing. Support the markets – not only the Village Markets but Palm Beach/ Currumbin markets that support our beloved farmers too (rumor has it they too have received such a notice!)

Life is too short to continuously fight battles, is it really too hard to find the grey area in the law and work together to make things better or exceptions for things that genuinely benefit the local community?

For those of us counting the days till Melb Cup fear not, the local racing calendar has plenty of events not far away to satisfy the urge to get dressed up with the girls, hit the track with a glass of bubbly in hand and make sure by CUP day you are in your finest of fine forms. Saturday 24th April in fact is the next date (less than 2 weeks away!) where you can join some of the coast’s most prominent fashionistas to share in a day of parades, pampering and bubbly…and check out their Autumn/Winter Fashion Launch.

The Gold Coast Turf Club is the place to be. For $55 you'll get a glass of bubbly (gee is there a theme coming along here), the inside track on fashion trends and a sumptuous platter lunch.  Give the functions team a call on 07 5538 1599 or drop them an email at functionscentre@goldcoastturf.com.au to lock in your place.

The Designer Forum will be featuring in their parade, seriously one of the best designer boutiques on the coast (with the exception of Adrenalin...we must share the love).  Other stores/brands that will be featured in the parade include Igedo, Kitten D’Amour and well to find out the rest, best you be there!

Now before we head trackside, don’t forget the golden rules of racing:

1.    Don’t let your dress reveal all your assets.

2.    Less is not really more at the races.

3.    High high heels mean you sink further into the grass, so go easy on the height!

4.    Don’t forget your heel candy.  (A little piece of magic that stops you from sinking into the grass.)

5.    Grab a pair of fold up flats to throw in your handbag.

6.    Pace yourself, there is nothing elegant about being drunk at the races, seriously water, champers, water, champers, water, champers.  You will thank me Sunday morning – even if it is a long weekend!

If you’re stuck for something to wear, check out some of the Designer Forum’s new labels especially Story for Tang, but don’t anyone buy their silk jumpsuit because that’s what I’m wearing!

There are many wonderful things in life. Clothes, fashion, style, shopping, shopping and oh more shopping. I feel incredibly lucky I am able to earn a living from doing something I love – helping educate men and women on what to wear. There is nothing quite like the satisfying feeling of having a client walk away from a Personal Shopping session with a new found confidence.

In addition to my gorgeous clients, this year, I decided to try my hand at teaching. Although, I use to teach the Bronze Medallion at Bondi Surf Club a few years back, this time I opted to delve into the world of the Gen Y’s and tackle the Diploma of Styling at the Australian Institute of Creative Design on the GC. I must admit, it’s always a little daunting. First class... what will the students be like? Are they going to relate to me? What to wear (yes even I sometimes wonder what to wear – I mean after all as much as you dress for yourself when walking into a room full of Gen Y’s the first thing they will do is look you up and down and as the old saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression!)

I was however very pleasantly surprised. The group of girls I have the pleasure of guiding and mentoring on their way to becoming world-class stylist…. are without a doubt incredibly talented (or maybe it’s just they have a dam good teacher…ha-ha). I am though, seriously a very lucky woman. Although I only have 11 students in my class, each week they continue to blow me away. Their continued creativity has well and truly exceeded the expectations I had of them so early in the course!  Over the past couple of weeks, the girls have undertaken a flat lay shoot, client makeover and this week an inspired shoot, whereby they were to create a shoot without any guidance of a scene that inspired them. I have attached a couple of photo’s on thefashionplayground.com/blog gallery as there were too many to post to this blog – let’s just say I was impressed, incredibly impressed.

For anyone interested in becoming a stylist, wanting to learn about Fashion Business Management, Makeup, Hair, Design – feel free to email me and I am happy to talk to you about the abundance of courses being offered by AICD. Alternatively check out the AICD at www.aicdedu.com.au

Well like any other night as much as the Logies is about celebrating the talent on our Australian Screens, it really is about the red carpet fashions isn’t it? So without any further ado let’s get straight to the hits, misses, the what the’s and the down right WOW’s!

The hits –  Ada Nikadoumo - the most perfect of styles and colours to show off her petite but perfect figure. Lisa Wilkinson is the modern day Audrey Hepburn. Simple but so elegant – her perfect look, Rebecca Breeds – so stylish. Shelly Craft, Anna Hutchinson, Emily Simmons (that crazy Marilyn from Home and Away) loved her classic look.

This misses/ what the's – Gabrielle Cilmi – sorry but I don’t get her, her music or the blue number she wore. She continues to amaze me at the Gigs she gets. Rebecca Gibney, as much as I love her and I thought she looked incredibly pretty, her dress let her down. The colour and style did her no favours. Jessica McNamee (packed to the Rafters), the burnt orange was different but not what I would have chosen for her. Alex Perry a firm favourtie designer of mine, I didn't rate Kerri - Anne's number either.

The undecided – Jen Hawkins ?? She looked gorgeous, funky and eclectic and I am a big fan of Toni M, but I don’t think her outfit was really Logies style. But then again isn’t style all about expressing your individuality, isn’t it? And I wouldn’t be complaining if I looked like her. Claudia Carvan, loved her stylish old fashioned look, but again, just not Logies for me. Maybe she should have kept that one for RFAW this week.

THE WWWWWWOW’s in my books, Melissa Doyle looked as beautiful as her smile (I was really hoping she would take out best TV presenter just quietly). She graced the Red Carpet like no other. Esther Anderson (my pick for best dressed), Jessica Morais (the other pick for best dressed), the gorgeous Natalie Gruzlewski and Margo Robbie.

All in all, I think this year it was the more neutral softer feminine and elegant colours that stole the show this year.

Now for the blokes, sure they don’t have the opportunity to do as much with their outfits, but for me it was all about how they did their hair that topped off whether they made it in my books or not and maybe their smile, ok I am a sucker for a cute smile - Todd Lasance, Luke Jacobs, Hugh Sheridan (Yep your cous is hot Jess (wrongly or rightly)) and his on screen dad Eric Thompson all so sexy, sophisticated and handsome but it was probably Luke Mitchells charcoal suit that made him stand out a smidgen about the rest.

Well that’s a wrap from me on the fashions. for another year of Logies…….I must say as I struggled to stay awake, it was well worth it when Alf Stewart (aka Ray Meagher) took out the Gold Logie, very much overdue and well deserved.

I know I know it has been a long time between blogs. My apologies… I have been incredibly busy.

More to come on what I have been up to, but coming up… is a new and wonderful concept the Sanctuary Cove Festival!!! Fashion, Food, Wine, Art – a few of my favourite things and even better they will all be in the one place!!!

June 5 -20 sees Sanctuary Cove give everyone the opportunity to experience Village Life with the Sanctuary Cove Festival. I don't know about you, but every time I head up there, it really is like a little sanctuary, an oasis, a breath of fresh air, where you can take time out from the hustle and bustle of life and relax and feel like you are actually a million miles away from home, not 20-30 mins!

There is an abundance of events over the 3-week period to enjoy, but of course being the Fashionista at heart I am, it's the week of fashion that has me a little excited.

Monday night kicks off with a Ready to Wear Parade (organised by the GC Fashion Incubator and sponsored by GC City Council). Here, local designers are given the opportunity to showcase their talent and what a line up it is – Indigo Joker, Joy French, Taree Birse, Lisa Brown to name a few!

Wednesday Night Fashion Group International (FGI) are hosting a 55 min DVD presentation of the latest catwalk trends straight from the runways of Milan, Paris, NY and London. Can’t wait! Nothing like previewing the trends with a glass of bubbly – not to mention the opportunity to network!

Thursday is a "Style off" where up and coming stylists will have the chance to present outfits they have selected from designated boutiques at Sanctuary Cove to the general public.

If I was to mention every single event you'd be here for a while, so may I suggest you jump onto www.sanctuarycovefestival.com and see what takes your fancy?

Look forward to seeing everyone there. x

Taking the political aspect aside and whilst I am proud of the fact Australia has it’s first femal PM – there is definitely a little bit of room for improvement in the wardrobe dept! Perhaps the cabinet reshuffle could have included a new stylist??

I understand that Ms Gillard is an incredibly busy woman and what she wears is probably the furthest thing from her mind but her image is now more important than ever, so Julia, we are here to help!

I know not everyone has time to shop, let alone enjoys shopping, hence why we have stylists, but her current wardrobe lacks a consistent style, consistent basics – it is very hit and miss, no wonder she’s struggling.

I know it must be hard being in the public domain 24/7 and the last thing we all want is to have a bad picture of us published…anywhere, but the fact of the matter is –  she is who she is now and with her position comes an enormous amount of responsibility and so she must dedicate time and resources to looking the part!

Pre PM – Gillard was very conservative, tended to wear very boxy corporate masculine suits. Very rarely did we see her in anything feminine.

Post PM -There is improvement but as they say improvement is the biggest room in the house and seeing the lodge is now empty…. She could definitely do with a little assistance in developing her own classic perhaps more feminine style, similar to that of Quentin Bryce (our GG) who optimizes grace, style and elegance as did Jackie Onassis and Audrey Hepburn. Anna Bligh for that matter is always appropriately and elegantly dressed.

My advice….Ms Gillard would look fabulous in a classic cream Carla Zampatti suit, Anthea Crawford or Veronica Maine number.

I do like her in the black and white polka dot jacket that she was recently snapped in, very stylish indeed. Simple, classic – it just worked, however the necklace did not compliment her outfit and took away from its sophistication.

Mixing of patterns also rarely works so she needs to be very careful ie: a black top with a swirl embedded into the texture under a grey pin stripe suit, did her no favors at all and is definitely a no no.

Its no secret, getting dressed every day can be hard, no denying that.

It can be even trickier for red heads especially when the colour of her hair goes from a fresh vibrant rich red to an orange red.

At least her hair always looks immaculate, id love a boyfriend or husband that gets up at 4.30am in the morning to blow-dry my hair every day…heaven!

So, in a nutshell Julia, keep persevering and if you ever need some assistance, drop us a line, we are here to help!
