Body found on beach, search underway for survivors after boat capsizes

UPDATE at 12:20 PM AEST | THE body of a man has washed up on a beach on the NSW Mid North Coast after the boat he was on capsized north of Coffs Harbour this morning.

It happened about 200m offshore of Campbells Beach at Sapphire Beach, about 11.15am AEDT.

A short time later, the boat and the body of a man washed ashore, police said. The man, believed to be aged in his 80s, is yet to be formally identified.

It’s not yet known if anyone else was on board the boat at the time.

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter is on the scene, searching for any survivors in the water.

Surf Life Savers and Marine Rescue are also involved in the search.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and will forensically examine the boat. They will also prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
