Passengers unhurt after car crashes into tram

UPDATE: A CAR crashed into the front of a G:link tram full of passengers on the Gold Coast overnight.

It’s understood the silver vehicle pulled out in front of the southbound tram near Vista Street, Surfers Paradise at around 8pm on Sunday night.

The G:link driver reportedly applied the emergency brakes, but it was too late and the vehicle collided with the tram as it illegally proceeded through the intersection.

Witnesses said police were already on board the tram at the time of the collision and were able to stop the driver of the silver car from leaving the scene.

Part of the tram’s front paneling was ripped off during the collision.

There were no injuries reported, although it’s understood some people have been unable to get off the tram.

Emergency services were quick to the scene and southbound trams were delayed.

Northbound services were also delayed, however resumed at 8.40pm.

It’s the first vehicle verse tram collision since the light rail started transporting paid passengers in July.
