Pat Morgan

Gold Coast Treasure: Pat Morgan

Surfing and the Gold Coast go hand in hand, so it’s no surprise Pat Morgan has found his way on to our Gold Coast Treasure list.

The 75-year-old is a renowned surfboard shaper, with many of his unique boards ridden by champions of surf back in the day.

Morgan was known to experiment with surfboard shapes and is responsible for the development of the keel fin board.

Although no longer building boards, Morgan still surfs everyday at Rainbow Bay.

Gold Coast Auto Wreckers

Gold Coast Treasure: Gold Coast Auto Wreckers

Most Gold Coasters are familiar with the wrecking yard located on the Pacific Motorway at Reedy Creek. It has a ramshackle house with an eye-catching pink FX Holden on the veranda.

Gold Coast Auto Wreckers has been operating from the site for decades, opening when the motorway was a mere gravel road.

It is considered to be the biggest wrecking yard on Australia’s east coast and owner Will Smith (or Will the Wrecker as he is fondly known) has many memories of the thousands of old cars that fill the 5ha site.

Check out our interview with Will and check out unseen footage of the wrecking yard below:

A tireless and popular community worker, Cr Dawn Crichlow is everything a Gold Coast Treasure should be.

The fun loving 73-year-old, who has been the face of Southport for 25 years, is set to run once again for the division 6 at the upcoming local council election.

She is currently patron of countless Gold Coast organisations, including sport, swimming, gymnastics, music and community-based groups.

Bede Durbidge

Gold Coast Treasure: Bede Durbidge

Currumbin pro surfer Bede Durbidge is one of the best surfers in the world.

After shattering his pelvis in a massive wipe-out at Hawaii’s Pipeline late last year, the 33-year-old has been forced to take a step back from his surfing career.

Instead, Durbidge has been focusing on his family life, and his other interests – the Balter Brewing Co. (which he is about to launch with mates Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning and Josh Kerr in  Currumbin) and the Fox Grom Shootout (a surfing competition he developed on North Stradbroke Island).

Although unable to hit the surf at next week’s Quiksilver Pro, Durbidge told myGC he will still be enjoying one of his favourite breaks from the commentator box.
