Michelle Bridges reveals her post-pregnancy workout regime

Michelle Bridges may have only given birth to son Axel 3 weeks ago, but the new mum has already begun getting her body back into tip top shape.

On Instagram today, the 45-year-old shared a breakdown of her routine after being asked by a number of mums.

Although the Biggest Loser trainer is a fan of weight training, the 45-year-old is sticking to cardio in her post-pregnancy regime alternating between jogging and walking.

She advised that new mums should only attempt a 15-20 minute though, as the one she posted was suitable to someone with herr 30 year personal training experience.

Melanoma most common cancer in young Queenslanders

Cancer Council has issued an urgent warning for Queenslanders under 35, with the latest figures showing melanoma is the most common cancer diagnosed in young Queenslanders.

Recent statistics from the Queensland Cancer Registry show around 110 melanomas are diagnosed in males aged under 35 each year, followed by 80 cases of testicular cancer.

Around 140 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in Queensland females under age 35, with thyroid the second most common cancer diagnosed, affecting more than 60 females each year.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the figures reinforced an urgent warning for young Queenslanders to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide.

“Melanoma remains within the top four most commonly diagnosed cancers for all Queenslanders at all stages of life,” Ms Clift said.

“It is concerning to see so many cases diagnosed in those under 35 – a diagnosis of melanoma at such a young age can be particularly distressing.

“Sun exposure in childhood influences the risk of skin cancer later in life – it’s vital for parents to protect young children from harmful UV rays as much as possible.

“Slip on protective clothing, Slop on minimum SPF30 broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat, Seek shade and Slide on wrap-around sunnies when out and about this summer to best reduce your risk of skin cancer.”

Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Around 3000 melanoma and 133,000 non-melanoma skin cancers are diagnosed across the state each year.

Cancer Council is urging young Queenslanders to get to know their skin, and book in for a GP visit if they notice anything change.

“Get to know your own skin and conduct regular self-checks. If you notice a new spot or lesion, or a spot or lesion change in shape, colour or size – visit your GP immediately,” Ms Clift said.

Some changes to look for in the skin include new moles, moles that increases in size, an outline of a mole that becomes notched, moles that itch or tingle or spots that look different from the others.”

Sun protection is required when the UV Index is 3 and above. In Queensland, the UV Index is 3 and above all year round, so Cancer Council Queensland sun protection is required through every season.

Jesinta Campbell feels confident naked because of Buddy Franklin

She has a body to die for, but Jesinta Campbell admits she has only felt comfortable naked since falling in love with her fiance Buddy Franklin.

The Gold Coast beauty opened up about her body confidence in an interview with Women’s Health magazine, saying the Sydney Swans player helped her to love herself.

“I feel so confident naked, which is funny — I never felt like that until I was with my fiancé,” she told the publication. “Maybe it’s because when somebody loves you so much, it’s easier to love yourself.”

Appearing on the cover of the magazine in a swimsuit, the 24-year-old credited her toned physique to hard work. “There really is no secret, you’ve just got to work hard,” she said.

Griffith receives $1M for vaccine development

A team of Griffith University researchers has received more than $1 million to find new vaccine targets for diseases which cause meningitis, gonorrhoea and middle ear infections.

“I want to understand everything I can about these diseases so people don’t have to suffer unnecessarily,” Gold Coast’s Institute for Glycomics researcher, Dr Kate Seib said.

“Meningococcal disease is very hard to detect and can kill in less than six hours. You want a vaccine so you don’t have to rely on correct and fast diagnosis”.

Dr Seib said while gonorrhoea, a sexually transmitted infection, was not commonly talked about it infects 106 million people a year worldwide and is associated with infertility and increased transmission of HIV.

“There is currently no vaccine for gonorrhoea and we are on our last option of antibiotics due to antibiotic resistance so it is essential we put money and time in this before it becomes an untreatable problem.”

Dr Kate Seib said it was essential projects which explore these diseases were funded as they affect such a large number of people worldwide.

The research grants from the prestigious National Health and Medical Research Council will fund two key projects, which will be conducted with Dr Chris Day and Dr John Attack.

One project, titled ‘The glyco-interactome of pathogenic Neisseria: understanding disease and defining vaccine targets,’ has received $436,012 and the other, titled ‘Phasevarion mediated virulence mechanisms of the human pathogens Moraxella catarrhalis and non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae’ received $641,979.

The Institute for Glycomics received a total of $4.17 million for five projects and two fellowships, which explore various bacteria and their infection pathways, and viruses that have long-term health impacts such as arthritis. This is a 41.6 per cent success rate in the project grant scheme, which is three times the national average of 13.5 per cent.

Dr Seib’s first project explores Neisseria meningitidis, which causes meningitis and sepsis, together with Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which causes gonorrhoea. These bacteria cause very different diseases but come from the same family and share many common proteins.

The second project will explore the mechanisms that contribute to disease caused by the bacteria Moraxella catarrhalis and non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae, which are two major causes of middle ear infections in children and respiratory disease in adults.

Dr Seib said this research will aid vaccine development by defining the repertoire of stably expressed potential vaccine targets of these bacteria and will improve our understanding of how these bacteria are able to adapt to their host and avoid killing by the immune system. She said both these projects involved diseases that only infected humans.

“We need to develop vaccines for these diseases as it is essential to prevent them rather than just treat them,” she said.

Institute Director Professor Mark von Itzstein congratulated Dr Seib and her colleagues on their grant success and said it further confirmed the Institute’s reputation as a leading biomedical research institute.

“Our research is a brave new frontier and we are making exciting advances towards the discovery of new drugs, vaccines and diagnostics for significant diseases,” he said.
