Crash triggers big delays in Southport

A NASTY multi-vehicle crash on Smith Street is causing extensive delays for motorists in Southport.

It’s understood two cars came to grief at the intersection with Olsen Avenue about 4pm.

One of the vehicles was reportedly trying to merge into the westbound lanes of the Smith Street Motorway from Olsen Ave when a vehicle travelling west towards the M1 smashed into it.

Traffic at the already bustling intersection was thrown into disarray following the collision, which happened during the school pick-up rush.

Traffic heading west on Smith Street was backed up for almost two kilometres, back to Kumbari Avenue.

It was still slow moving through the area at the time of writing, with the wrecked cars blocking one of the westbound lanes.

It’s not known how many people, if any, were injured in the crash.

Drivers are being urged to steer clear of the area if possible.
