Dad, babies fight for life after mum, son killed in horror crash

A MOTHER and her young son have been killed and her husband and their two infant children critically injured in a horror crash on a highway near the NSW-Victoria.

The family-of-five was driving east along the Murray Valley Highway at Brimin, near Rutherglen, when it’s understood a truck crossed onto the wrong side of the road and smashed into their car just after 9.30pm on Friday.

Sadly, the 37-year-old mother and her 12-year-old son could not be saved and died at the scene.

The woman’s 44-year-old husband and their two other infant children, aged just eight months and two years, sustained life-threatening injuries and were airlifted to hospital, each in a critical condition.

The father was flown to the Royal Alfred, while his surviving children were taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Superintendent John Fitzpatrick from Victoria Police said the family was travelling home from dinner at the time.

“The gravity of that scene – to see a family in that position – was very difficult,” he said.

“Our investigators will be determining whether distraction, fatigue, speed or drugs are a part of this.”

The 31-year-old man who was driving the truck is believed to have been working at the time.
