Dangerous conditions force lifeguards to close most Gold Coast beaches

Most Gold Coast beaches have been closed today, as wild weather continues lashing the coastline.

Lifeguards made the call this morning, saying it’s too dangerous for swimmers.

Only a handful of beaches remain open, including Kirra, Tugun, Tallebudgera, Burleigh Heads, 4th Avenue (Burleigh), North Burleigh and Miami.

Lifeguards are urging beachgoers to stay out of the water and observe warnings at the beach.

Meantime, a tropical cyclone developed overnight near Fiji.

It’s not tipped to directly impact the Queensland coast, though swells are expected to build throughout the week.

The Gold Coast is also in for more rain this week, after a weekend of heavy totals.

The Bureau is expecting falls of up to 40 millimetres most days this week.

While in the last 24 hours, Tallebudgera received more than 50 millimetres, while areas in the hinterland soared over 70 millimetres.

The day before, most coastal areas took in more than 100 millimetres.
