Driver killed in crash following police chase

A YOUNG man has died after wrapping his car around a tree, allegedly while trying to evade police on the M1 south of the Gold Coast.

In a statement, NSW Police said officers spotted the man’s Mazda Hatch travelling above the speed limit on the M1 at Tweed Heads just before 9.30pm last night.

It’s understood officers tried intercepting the vehicle, but the 22-year-old driver failed to stop.

“The officers attempted to pursue the car for a short time, however, the pursuit was terminated due to the manner of driving,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

The Mazda was later found wrapped around a tree, with the driver still trapped inside.

Police said the young man behind the wheel sustained “significant injuries” and was rushed to Tweed Heads Hospital where sadly, he later died.

A critical incident investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police said officers from an independent police district will lead the investigation, which will also be subject to an independent review.
