Police were called to the scene at George Street, in the CBD, following reports construction workers had detained a man who stole a truck from their work site just after 2.00am this morning.

The three-tonne truck was parked near Martin Place for the Light Rail construction works, before an unknown man got into it and drove through the George Street work site.

He was only able to travel a short distance, before the truck crashed through the front windows of a nearby cafe.

The man still attempted to drive away.

Construction workers then chased the man on foot, and physically removed him from the vehicle.

They detained him until police arrived.

The 33-year-old man was breath tested at the scene, where he returned a positive reading.

He was then taken to hospital for tests, before being taken to the Day Street Police Station.
