UPDATE @ 11.00am | Police have confirmed that the elderly woman who’s car crashed into a building in Southport had actually died before the collision.
It’s understood the 78-year-old was travelling along Nerang Street after an appointment around 7.30am, when her can veered across the tram tracks and crashed into the Health HQ building.
Emergency services attended, though despite desperate attempts, the woman could not be saved.

District Juty Officer James Winter told reporters that the woman had actually passed away before the collision.
“Forensic police will carry out investigations, though it’s believed she was deceased from a medical episode prior to the actually accident occurring,” Officer Winter said.
QFES then helped to remove the woman from the vehicle.
“The victim is trapped in the vehicle, so the fire service are having to assist in removing some of the car from her to get her out.
“She’ll be assessed and then we’ll take her away,” Officer Winter said.
Police say no one else was injured in the incident.

The woman apparently suffered a medical incident while driving, causing her to veer off the road and crash into the Health HQ building on Nerang Street near High Street around 7.45am.
Emergency services attended, where critical care paramedics worked desperately to treat the woman’s critical injuries.
Reports from the scene now suggest the woman has passed away, though Queensland Police are unable to confirm this.
Paramedics have confirmed that they haven’t transported anyone to hospital.

Meantime motorists are being told to avoid the area, with Nerang Street traffic now being deferred through Cougal Street and Queen Street.
EARLIER @ 8.00am | An elderly woman is in a critical condition and reportedly trapped in her car, after crashing into the side of a building.
It happened on Nerang Street in Southport around 7.45am.
Paramedics say a woman in her 70s looks to have suffered a medical event at the wheel, causing her to leave the road and crash into the side of a building.
Critical care paramedics and the High Acuity Response Unit are also on scene, treating the woman for critical injuries.
Two fire crews are also on scene assisting paramedics, following reports the lady is trapped in the vehicle.
Police are also on scene.
Motorists are being urged to avoid Nerang Street.
