Firefighter burnt in out-of-control SA bushfire

A VOLUNTEER firefighter and a farmer are among three people burnt in an out-of-control bushfire tearing through farmland in South Australia’s mid-north this afternoon.

The fire at Nantawarra, near Port Wakefield, is fast-moving southeast toward the townships of Whitwarta, Bowmans and Balaklava.

Local firies say there is a risk to lives and homes, and residents should only leave now if there’s a clear path to safety.

At 2.35pm local time, the blaze had burned through around 1400 ha of stubble with a large fire front approximately 10km away from Balaklava and 13km away from Port Wakefield.

A 35-year-old volunteer firefighter has been airlifted south to Adelaide for treatment to severe burns.

It’s being reported two other men – including a local farmer – have also been injured.

CFS advises that the situation at the serious bushfire burning out of control at Nantawarra and Whitwarta north of Port Wakefield near the Kadina – Whitwarta Road and near the Balaklava to Nantawarra Road may change and threaten your safety.

CFS expects that a change in the wind direction / or fuel type at approximately 3pm may cause the fire to change direction or accelerate and move towards Whitwarta and Mt Templeton near the Balaklava – Nantawarra Road. People in this area may be threatened by this fire from now.

Check and follow your Bushfire Survival Plan. Take shelter before the fire arrives as radiant heat can kill you well before the flames reach you. Leave now if the path is clear.

You should not enter this area as the roads may not be safe.

Well prepared and actively defended homes can offer safety.
