Firefighters contain Wagga Wagga bushfire

UPDATE: FIREFIGHTERS have contained an out-of-control bushfire burning in the rural NSW city of Wagga Wagga. 

Crews were forced to protect homes around Vincent and Kooringal Roads around Lake Albert after a fire broke out under gusty conditions earlier this afternoon.

The fire continues to burn, but is understood to now be under control with the blaze no longer posing a threat to properties.

EARLIER: THE NSW Rural Fire Service has issued a Watch and Act alert for an out-of-control bushfire burning in the Riverina city of Wagga Wagga.

Firefighters are on scene of a large fire in the area of Vincent Road, Lake Albert. 

Authorities warn there is a heightened level of threat and conditions are changing.

Residents have been advised to start taking action now to protect their family.

If you live in the area but are away from home, it may not be safe to return to your property.
