Flaming tram brings billion dollar service to a grinding halt

THE Gold Coast’s billion dollar light rail service has been brought to a grinding halt after flames were reportedly seen shooting out from under a moving tram at Main Beach.

Early reports suggest passengers spotted flames coming from underneath the carriage shortly before 1.30pm, followed by a few puffs of smoke and a strong burning smell.

Services have been suspended in both directions between Southport and Surfers Paradise, passengers have been evacuated and emergency services – including paramedics – are on the scene.

Firefighters equipped with thermal imaging technology have failed to locate any heat source, with unconfirmed reports passengers may have mistaken a brake light with a fire alarm.

Buses are being arranged to transport customers while technicians inspect the stranded tram.

Translink has advised customers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.
