Free relaxation workshop launched for locals affected by cancer

Gold Coasters affected by cancer will be able to enjoy a free relaxation workshop this month.

The two-hour Learning to Relax Workshop will be held on Wednesday, August 30, from 10am until 12pm, and is one of a series of free workshops Cancer Council Queensland is piloting across the state.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said the workshop would offer free, practical assistance to local cancer patients. “We know how demanding the experience of cancer can be, not only for those diagnosed by cancer, but their carers, family and friends,” Ms McMillan said.

“We’re proud to pilot this new workshop on the Gold Coast, offering locals affected by cancer simple and effective strategies to relax and refocus.

“The workshops are run by our experienced Cancer Counselling Services staff, who understand the psychological impacts of a cancer diagnosis and treatment, and are underpinned by research supporting the benefits of relaxation in reducing anxiety.

“Exploring stress responses and learning relaxation exercises can also be useful for managing challenges in daily life, regardless of age or situation.”

One person is diagnosed with cancer every 20 minutes in Queensland – in the Gold Coast region alone, around 3630 people are diagnosed each year.

Ms McMillan said the Learning to Relax Workshop was one of the many great initiatives the charity’s Community Support Program can provide through the generous support of the community. “Patients can seek support at any stage of their cancer journey, from time of diagnosis, during and post treatment,” Ms McMillan said.

“We encourage all locals who have been affected by cancer to join us at the Learning to Relax Workshop and to get in touch now if they need support, information or referrals.”

The Learning to Relax Workshop will be held on Wednesday, August 30, from 10am until 12pm, at Cancer Council Queensland’s Southport office, 1 Short Street. Registrations can be made prior to August 25 by calling Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 or emailing livingmindfully@cancerqld.org.au.
