Gabriel Medina has beaten Kelly Slater

CURRENT No.1 Gabriel Medina has beaten veteran Kelly Slater in an epic final to win the World Surfing Tour event in Tahiti.

Brazilian Medina edged out 11-times world champion Slater by a mere 0.03 in the decider at the famous Teahupo’o reef break on Tuesday.

Slater needed to score a 9.33 in the dying stages, but only managed 9.30 with the last wave to go down 18.96 to 18.93.

Medina maintains his lead on the tour rankings ahead of Slater, who shot up four places into second.

Australia’s Joel Parkinson has slipped down to third, ahead of Michel Bourez, and countrymen Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow who both lost ground.

Four events remain on the 11-stop tour, with the Hurley Pro at Trestles in California next up in September.
