GC ELECTION: Two Gold Coast Councillors to battle for new Division 4 seat

It’s set to be a tough battle at the upcoming local council election, with two sitting Gold Coast councillors announcing they will be contesting the new Division 4.

It comes following changes to divisional boundaries, which means the new seat now includes Hollywell, Coombabah, South Stradbroke Island and the Sovereign Islands as well as the newly added suburb of Biggera Waters.

Current Division Four Councillor Kristyn Boulton has announced she is re-contesting the seat, while Division Three Councillor Cameron Caldwell has confirmed he will be putting his hat in the ring as well.

Taking to Facebook overnight, Cr Caldwell said he was “pleased to announce” that will be seeking re-election in the newly created Division 4 and urged locals to vote for him.

“Since 2012 I have represented Paradise Point, Hollywell, Runaway Bay, Coombabah, South Stradbroke Island & Sovereign Islands and with the newly formed division I look forward to representing Biggera Waters if I am fortunate enough to be elected,” he wrote.

“A recent boundary redistribution saw the largest single portion of the area I have represented since 2012 renamed Division 4 and in terms of suburbs only adds the one new suburb of Biggera Waters to those I have already been representing.

“Once these new boundaries were published there was no doubt or indecision, Division 4 is the area I want to represent.”

“I have the proven results over the last 8 years to deliver for our local area.”

Meanwhile, there’s been a shock announcement further down south, with former ABC presenter Bern Young revealing she has put her hand up for Division Thirteen.

It’s likely she will do battle with former Deputy Mayor Daphne McDonald, although Ms McDonald is yet to confirm whether she will contest the seat.

The Local Government Election is taking place on 28 March 2020, so mark the calendars Gold Coasters!
