GC ELECTION | Where to vote, when to vote, and who you can vote for

There’s just one day left to get your early vote in for your next Gold Coast Council, with the electoral commission warning that voting is still compulsory.

Voters could be looking at a $133 fine if they don’t have their say in time.

There are eleven places around the coast to submit your vote before March 28, which is still going ahead despite worries about the coronavirus crisis.

So far, early voting numbers have skyrocketed, with voters wanting to get in before venues get too crowded.

Tonight, locations are open until 6.00pm, before tomorrow’s voting day.

Here’s a list of voting locations:

  • Tugun Community Centre (Activity Room), 414 Coolangatta Rd, Tugun
  • 6/53 Township Drive, Burleigh Heads
  • Fradgley Hall Community Centre, Park Avenue, Burleigh Heads
  • Albert Waterways Community Centre, Cnr Hooker & Sunshine Boulevard, Mermaid Waters
  • Show Society, Mudgeeraba Showgrounds, 115 Mudgeeraba Road, Worongary
  • Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre, 296 Nerang Broadbeach Road, Carrara
  • G4, Southport Community Centre, 6 Lawson Street, Southport
  • Runaway Bay Community Centre, Lae Drive, Runaway Bay
  • 4/54 Siganto Drive, Helensvale

The Tugun location is also accepting votes for the Currumbin by-election.

Mayor Tom Tate was campaigning down in Tugun last week and said that the early voting locations are taking every precaution to ensure social distancing and cleanliness.

“Absolutely we wont allow more than 100 in there, and the hygiene – it’s being cleaned at the highest level.

“Public toilets around the place that were being cleaned twice a week are now being cleaned daily, to make sure that those facilities, whether its a library and the like, the hygiene standard is really increased,” Mr Tate said.

At this stage, the March 28 date is still going ahead, though voters are being urged to get along and vote, particularly the elderly and more vulnerable.

Can you guys please explain to me how are you going to prevent everyone from getting covid19 at the election polls? I think you can all get stuffed, I’m voting for my family’s and my health… you won’t be seeing me at the voting polls… do you want a reasonable excuse: here is one, The World is in lockdown! If you morons can’t see this and call this election off, you don’t deserve my vote!

I agree. I will not be voting at the polls either. I have a 12 day old daughter at home and i’m not risking her or her mothers heath by lining up to vote. Send me the fine but I will object it for the obvious reasons!

We have been ordered to self isolate and vote or be fined for not voting. This is on par wth the brain dead authorities who allowed the cruise ships to embark sick and infected people into the community! Just postpone for a couple of weeks and we can do a postal vote Simple! My main concern is for my partner myself and for my fellow aussies. My wife and I are in the danger age for this disease so we have been isolating, if we contract this filthy virus the blame will be square on the shoulders of this rediculous… Read more »

Postal not ideal either as it remains on paper for a number of days, however all the workers can wear gloves to count votes etc or take other precautions as Australia post workers are.
I agree, don’t risk it. You have a very good excuse not to vote if phone voting or net voting isnt available or accessible for you

Yeah its crazy. Mayor Tom Tate was all for the cruise ships and anything with his invested money. Can we send him away to me mayor of Wuhan China.

Too right. The world is in lockdown and the election has no solution to helping the virus. This gold coast committee need a wake up.

Please don’t pay it. People need to vote with people power. Don’t give the idiots your vote. They don’t deserve it for this one stupid decision alone. They are not acting in the best interests of the public. They are acting in the best interests of themselves

This is ridiculous!!! All the rules around social distancing and the overall advice that unless it is necessary stay at home… what will it hurt to either figure out online voting or postponing it for a few months. This is so disappointing!

How can I vote when I’m stranded overseas?

It’s ridiculous. Voting should’ve been postponed or postal vote closure date extended. It’s not essential. I’m risking my health coming out to vote or risk a fine which l don’t have money to waste. Very selfish act Gold Coast council

EVERYONE….DONT VOTE AND DONT PAY THE FINE. Tell them to get stuffed!! I’m not in the area at all, not even in that state but im so bloody angry about this. I’m all for giving fines for doing the Wrong thing but not for doing the Right things. If people aren’t there handing out pamphlets and candidates are not out there promoting themselves then no one should be expected to vote . The Today show commented and read a reply from the council stating that they’ve been advised it’s less risk than going to a supermarket so it’s going ahead.… Read more »

Bloody insane, to put it mildly. The only one who thinks running this election is a good idea is the virus!!
Please use common sense Queenslanders and don’t vote. And bugger the fine too. Human health is #1.

I don’t think that it’s in my interest to go and vote for council, At 68 low immune system . So I’m to get a doctors certificate, so as to ph vote and clog up the system even more just because you want me to vote ! You are not putting my health first ,I have spent the last 3 wks doing what the government Has asked me to do , why is it ok for me to go out now ! There is dozens of people going to the Carrara indoor sports stadium because you have put that as a voting place and the place is closed. Thanks for wasting everyone’s time! It’s unbelievable that we are even made to vote – politics before the people!

I’ve been trying to phone vote for days and have not been able to get through to register let alone vote, its just insane. I think it is ludicrous we are told to #stay at home by the federal government, yet local government want us to put our health at risk and go to the voting polls. I for one am not, I will not put myself (with a sore throat) or others at risk for the sake of voting for a council that obvious does not care for its constituents. Its just not safe, its to scary.

I have been doing the right thing with distancing and isolation, I couldn’t even visit my daughter for her birthday yet I’m told I have to vote??? This all sounds contradictory to the rules that have been made. I am at an age of risk and have a slight runny nose and headaches but more importantly, I’m the sole carer of my autistic son. I don’t want to risk either getting the virus or maybe giving it to someone. This is all to upsetting and frustrating. I could have applied for postal voting but simply I’ve been too busy keeping… Read more »

I was traveling around Australia this year and have people minding my family home. We can’t come home as we would have to ask them to leave. They would have no where to go as they have lost there jobs. And it is not safe to do so. I think its safer to stay away in the bush on the farm where we are at. So no I won’t be voting this election .

BAN COMPULSORY VOTING ALREADY!!! Its a horrible rule to have even before Covid-19! Now its just plain crazy!!! People should not be forced to vote! People should not be fined if they do not wish to participate! Some people go in and cast random votes just because theyre forced to participate and have no idea what theyre doing or what the people stand for that they are voting for! Let the people who have educated themselves on the matters at hand and who wish to participate and have a say, vote, dont force people who dont care and have no… Read more »

Wake up gold coast electoral committee. Once again your looking after yourselves and own interests rather than that of THE PEOPLE your meant to lead and represent. There’s barley a comment with anyone wanting to risk the virus spreading for the in important fact of holding an election during lockdown. Once again gold coast people can’t tryst our running candidates. Are we really trying to be shown as the stupidest area in the world.

I think that politics put first before health in this climate is insane, ignorant and blatant negligence to the people your paid to serve. This election should have been postponed until further notice, you guys put wealth before health and should all be ashamed of yourselves. If a fine lands in my mail box I will simply wipe my ass with it and flush it down the toilet. You are all a mockery of the system and Australia wide people are shaking there heads in disgust. “Pull ya heads in”
