GC to trial wheelchair friendly beach mats

Wheelchair friendly beach mats will be rolled out on the Gold Coast next summer.

Made from 100 per cent recycled plastic bottles, they’ll be put on the sand at Burleigh every Saturday from September 2016 through to May 2017.

Mayor Tom Tate says a decision on using them permanently right along the coast will be made at the end of summer, after the first trial run.

“The community asked for better access to our beaches and we listened,’’ he said.

“If this trial is successful, we will look to provide beach access equipment at other locations.’’

Mayor Tate would eventually like to see the mats used on the tourist strip’s famous beaches from Coolangatta to The Spit in the north.

“Let it be known that on the Gold Coast people with all abilities can enjoy our beaches and that we leave nobody behind,” he said.

And if people have wheelchairs which can’t roll down the mats, special beach wheelchairs will be available free of charge.
