A 13-year-old girl has died while trying to save her brother in rough surf condition at a Victorian beach on Thursday night.
The girl and her 11-year-old brother were going for a swim at Williamsons Beach near Wonthaggi when the boy got into trouble at about 8pm.
Police believe the girl and her father ran into the surf to help him, pulling him from the water with only minor injuries.

The girl then got into trouble and was pulled unresponsive from the water.
The family, police and paramedics tried to revive the her for more than hour but she died on the sand.
The boy was taken to the Monash Medical Centre with minor injuries.
Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
