Some of the best athletes in the world could soon be heading back to our shores, with the Gold Coast in talks to host the World Athletics Championships.
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate and Tourism Minister Kate Jones said yesterday that they remain optimistic about the city’s chances of securing the event, which is one of the biggest in world sport.
“It will be a similar partnership that we did with the Commonwealth Games but in this case the infrastructure is already in place and our strategy that we learnt from operating the games will bear us well to bid for the World Championships,” Mayor Tate said.

“I think we as Aussies and Queenslanders would love to see the fast men and women running at top speed here on the Gold Coast.”
It comes after the Gold Coast City Council and State Government met with world athletics chief Sebastian Coe during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games to discuss a possible Queensland pitch for the championships.
Minister Jones confirmed on Thursday that if Queensland was successful, the Gold Coast would be the key host city.
The event could be held here as early as 2025.
