Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate plays down talks of a Jeff Horn beach fight

Mayor Tom Tate has knocked back Dean Lonergan’s idea for a Jeff Horn fight in the middle of Surfers Paradise.

Horn’s promoter, who managed to gain millions of dollars in support from the State Government, told Newscorp he’s keen to organise The Hornet’s next fight on the Gold Coast.

He wants a temporary stadium built on the beach at Surfers Paradise.

Currently, there’s been no discussions about the fight between the State Government and Gold Coast City Council.

Cr Tate doesn’t think the event stacks up.

“I would welcome Jeff to fight on the beach but I can’t see there being the right size of a stadium being built there,” he said.

“There could only be about four or five thousand people in that location, and there’s got to be much more demand than that.

“Council won’t be putting any money towards it.”

After stints with the ABC and AAP, Mitchell joined 1029 Hot Tomato in 2017. He’ll be out and about bringing you the news that matters on the Coast.
