Rising Gold Coast tennis star Kim Birrell has advanced to the third round of the Australian Open after an upset win over Croatia’s Donna Vekic.
The 20-year-old, ranked 240 in the world, defeated the 29th seed in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in what is by far the biggest moment of her career.

She recovered before Vekic eventually took the match to a decider.
That’s where Birrell piled on the pressure, cruising through the final set to take out the match.

Today’s win comes just two weeks after the biggest scalp of her career when she defeated world number 10 Daria Kasatkina at the Brisbane International.
Birrell who grew up training at her parent’s Queens Park Tennis Centre in Southport has had an up and down time during her short career.
She had a lengthy stint on the sideline after undergoing surgery for an elbow injury in 2016.
She returned to playing in February last year but struggled to return to her best before hitting some form late last year.
Birrell will now play the winner of tonight’s match between Angelique Kerber and Beatriz Haddad Maia.
