TFH Gold Coast Titans go the extra mile for Queensland farmers

THE Titans won’t only be taking on the North Queensland Cowboys this weekend – they’ll also be fighting for Queensland’s drought-affected farmers.

Cbus Super Stadium will be the fullest it’s been all season this weekend, with fans flocking from all over to farewell game legend, Johnathan Thurston (JT).

Taking advantage of the jam-packed stadium, the Gold Coast Titans will be asking spectators for donations to help buy Riverina feed pallets for farmers struggling in the sunshine state.

Fans from far and wide will also be able to contribute to the appeal by bidding for sporting memorabilia, including Titans jerseys and head-gear signed by Thurston, in an online auction.

Will Matthews, a Titans junior, grew up on the land in a strong farming community.

He and his family have endured drought before and while they can accept that there are hard times, they know there are plenty of others going without and even having to watch their stock and crops perish.

“The farmers they depend on the seasons and the rain, so without any rain they are going to be doing it tough, their stock depends on how much water they get so, obviously living in Australia it’s a pretty dry country and especially the last couple of years it’s been super dry so tough times for them” said Matthews.

While water is at the centre of the problem, Matthews says cattle prices tumble almost as quickly as the conditions on the land which is why he says he is so happy to help the Gold Coast club.

“It means a lot to me, obviously we don’t live in a farming community here on the Gold Coast, but for us to get behind all the farmers out there, it means a lot to me and it’s really special” said Matthews.

At the game, there’ll be a Sunshine Frizelles branded farm truck on the precinct and an army of tin rattlers collecting donations.

LIVIN are also assisting with proceeds from the 50/50 raffle being donated to the drought appeal and the Titans Community Foundation.

For those who won’t be at Titans v Cowboys match this weekend, there’s an online auction of sporting memorabilia, including:

• The entire THF Gold Coast Titans squads match worn jerseys are being auctioned.

• A hybrid GC Titans – NQ Cowboys jersey which has been signed by both teams is also on offer.

• 4 x Madison JT inspired head gear signed by Johnathon Thurston
