Tragic end to frantic search after man’s body is found in Gold Coast creek

UPDATE 10:15PM | POLICE have found the body of a man who drowned while kayaking along Currumbin Creek on Friday afternoon.

It’s understood the man, 54, was thrown into the water after his kayak overturned in the creek near Cyclades Crescent at Currumbin Waters just before 5.30pm.

He failed to resurface and his empty kayak was found a short time later.


Scores of police officers and SES volunteers spent two hours searching the waterways for the man while the police helicopter guided them from above but to no avail.

Sadly, the man’s body was found just after 7.30pm, near where he was last seen.

Police released a statement confirming the devastating news shortly after 10pm.

FIRST: A FRANTIC search is underway for a man who police fear may have drowned in Currumbin Creek, on the southern Gold Coast.

It’s understood the man was kayaking east along the creek when his kayak overturned near Cyclades Crescent at Currumbin Waters around 5.30pm on Friday.

The man, who is reported to be aged in his late 40s or early 50s, was thrown into the water and failed to resurface. He has not been seen or heard from since.

The police helicopter joined the search effort on Friday night, inspecting the canals from above, while police officers and SES volunteers combed the banks on foot and used boats to search the water.

No further information was immediately available at the time of writing.
