Highway to be closed for several hours after fatal crash in NSW

A DRIVER has been killed and another remains trapped following a horror two-car crash northwest of Sydney.

The accident happened on the Castlereagh Highway, 10km north of Mudgee, just after midday.

In a statement, police confirmed a woman behind the wheel of one of the cars died at the scene.


Emergency crews are trying to free the second driver, who remains trapped in the wreckage with serious injuries.

A rescue helicopter has been dispatched to the scene and is expected to airlift the surviving driver to hospital.

The Castlereagh Highway is closed in both directions and is expected to remain so for several more hours yet.

Southbound traffic is being diverted via Lesters Lane, while those heading north are getting off at Hill End Road.

Crash Investigators are making their way to the crash site to examine the scene.
