A MAJOR police operation is underway following the discovery of two bodies near Newcastle.
Emergency services were called to a home in Newcastle Street at Stockton about 6am on Friday after concerns were raised for the welfare of the occupants.
Police said officers located the body of a 75-year-old woman inside the home.

A short time later, the body of the woman’s 76-year-old husband was located in the surf at Stockton Beach.
Crime scenes have been established at both locations and are being examined by forensic police.
Detectives from Newcastle are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“Initial inquiries suggest no third parties are being sought,” NSW Police said in a statement.
“Detectives will await the outcome of post mortem examinations to determine the direction of further inquiries.”
The tragedy comes less than 24 hours after three people were killed in a boating accident offshore of Stockton.
