What’s possibly worse for the Italians is the retirement of their iconic goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon.

The 39-year-old called time on his 175 game international career just moments after the loss.

Buffon has been a mainstay of the side since his debut in 1997 and kept a clean sheet in his final ever international match.

He left the pitch in tears before tweeting from the national team’s official account.

After stints with the ABC and AAP, Mitchell joined 1029 Hot Tomato in 2017. He’ll be out and about bringing you the news that matters on the Coast, with a focus on local sports and the Commonwealth Games.
