Italy says arrivederci to WC18 after losing to Sweden

For the first time in 59 years, Italy won’t be at the FIFA World Cup.

The four-time champions failed to qualify for Russia 2018 after a goalless draw against Sweden in the second leg of their playoff.

Sweden managed to progress to their first World Cup since 2006, on aggregate, after winning the first leg 1-0.

What’s possibly worse for the Italians is the retirement of their iconic goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon.

The 39-year-old called time on his 175 game international career just moments after the loss.

Buffon has been a mainstay of the side since his debut in 1997 and kept a clean sheet in his final ever international match.

He left the pitch in tears before tweeting from the national team’s official account.

After stints with the ABC and AAP, Mitchell joined 1029 Hot Tomato in 2017. He’ll be out and about bringing you the news that matters on the Coast.
