Koala and joey rescued after surviving Hinterland bushfire

A heartbreaking photo has emerged from the Hinterland bushfires of an injured koala protecting her joey after fire tore through the area.

The koala and her joey were found late on Friday afternoon near Canungra by a local Police officer.

The mum had suffered burns but her joey appeared to escape injure.

They were taken to the RSPCA Queensland Wildlife hospital for treatment and are both in a stable condition.

Anyone travelling through bushfire affected areas is urged to be vigilant for wildlife.

They’re also encouraging residents living near affected areas to place bowls of water in various locations on their property
