Light Rail on track for Palm Beach

Minister for Main Roads and Transport Mark Bailey has called suggestions to have the Light Rail run parallel to the M1 “bizarre” and that the Queensland State Government wants to create the most direct route to the airport.

Member for Burleigh Michael Hart has suggested the extension should be built on Government-owned land, which is situated next to the M1.

He’s concerned that the Government is not listening to Palm Beach residents and that the community consultations were mainly with people who lived in Northern parts of the Gold Coast.

“They need to speak to the people who will be impacted,” he said.

Minister Bailey has rubbished this.

“This is a very bizarre idea from Mr Hart,” he told MyGC.

“The most obvious and likely route for the Light Rail is to go directly to the airport and connect up the whole of that coastal strip.”

He added the business case for the extension from Broadbeach to Burleigh will be finished by the end of the year and released in early 2019.

After stints with the ABC and AAP, Mitchell joined 1029 Hot Tomato in 2017. He’ll be out and about bringing you the news that matters on the Coast.
