Local surfing stars sail through first round at Trestles

MICK Fanning and Joel Parkinson have continued their fight for another World Championship Title, sailing through the first round of the Hurley Pro at Trestles in California.

Fanning was up in heat two, taking on Brazil’s Miguel Pupo and America’s Brett Simpson but forced both of his opposition into the second round elimination with a heat total of 12.40.

Parkinson took on Raoni Monteiro and fellow Australia Kai Otton and secured his spot in the third round with a heat total of 14.77.

A shock loss to 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, forced into the second round elimination by fellow American Tanner Gudauskas.

Australia’s Ace Buchan also managed to secure his spot in the third round.

There’s still a few surfers left to go in the first round, including Aussies Owen Wright, Julian Wilson, Bede Durbidge, Mitch Crews and Josh Kerr.
