Locals shocked as NightQuarter Helensvale announces it’s closing down

One of the Gold Coast’s most loved food and music venues has announced it will be closing its iconic container doors after failing to reach an agreement with its landlord over a massive rental increase.

NightQuarter owners Michelle Christoe and Ian Van der Woude broke the sad news to locals overnight, revealing they are “bitterly disappointed” they couldn’t reach a compromise with SCentre, the owners and operators of Westfield Australia and New Zealand.

“We had an agreement for an extended term at the site subject to agreement on revised rent,” Mr Van der Woude said.

“The landlord was seeking more than double the rent for an extended five-year term.

“Personally, this has been a very difficult decision for Michelle and I to make and we are heartbroken that we couldn’t reach a deal to continue the incredible NightQuarter Helensvale legacy that we have put our heart and soul into.”

The husband and wife duo said that for NightQuarter to accept the higher rent under the new agreement, they would have to pass on increases of over double to their vendors, which they didn’t want to do.

“We looked at all the options, but in the end we needed to make a decision that was in the best interest of the company, our employees and our community of stallholders. We would have gone broke if we accepted what Scentre were offering,” they said.

Before making their decision, Ms Christoe and Mr Van der Woude searched extensively for an alternate site on the Gold Coast; but have not yet been able to secure anything suitable.

“My husband, Ian and I have been actively seeking out alternative options to relocate NightQuarter and have looked at quite a few sites.  We are hopeful to be able to secure a new site in the very near future,” Ms Christoe said.

Following the announcement, thousands of locals took to social media to express their disappointment.

“What an absolute shame for the northern Gold Coast! Such a great family friendly venue with entertainment for everyone,” one person commented.

“This is just sad news. Night Quarter you have given so much to the Gold Coasts food, entertainment and creative community. Here is to coming back bigger and even more spectacular,” wrote another.

The highly successful NightQuarter Helensvale opened in November 2015 and has since hosted a range of major touring acts including RUFUS, Amy Shark, The Cat Empire, Sticky Fingers, Pete Murray, Simple Plan, The Living End, The Presets, Illy and more.

NightQuarter will continue to operate until 1 February 2019, where they will close with pop band UB40.

The Night Quarter was not my cup of tea. Putting a jumble of containers together with a tarp over it looked real third world and should never have been allowed as a suitable venue on the Gold Coast. I went a couple of times at the request of my son and friends and never found anything to recommend. All that being said, it disgusts me to think that this global monopoly could expect double the rent for what was/is a small industrial site surrounded by high traffic roads and highways. I hope the current tenants find somewhere decent for their… Read more »

I find Bejay’s comment about Night Quarter being ‘real third world’ rather offensive and unnecessary, but that said, I think that corporate greed has no place in small business and should not be allowed. The Gold Coast City Council should put our money to good use and supply suitable venues for these small businesses who are making a go instead of relaying on welfare!

Yes I also went in the first weeks of their operation, we were excited at the prospect of somewhere new to go for food/drinks/entertainment without having too far to travel. have to say I wondered how the hell patrons were expected to pay to get in then pay for ,,,, at best average food, and (at the time) pretty ordinary entertainment,,, I can only assume it had improved a lot, as I realise a lot of people continued to go there. It may very well have turned into something great, but with a landlord like Westfield it would be a… Read more »

Once again, greedy corporations & CEO’s with their ridiculous rent increases ruin something that gave joy to thousands of Aussies.

What about the land up at the end of the spit? Great spot for bands and lots of room. Come on Tom, let them have it!

It would be awesome if they move it north rather than south. There are not many venues suitable for an evening out with young kids between Springwood and Helensvale.
I think it would do really well if it moved to the Hyperdome.

Isn’t it just typical, a new venue opens with the full support of the land owners and fully loved by all visitors, but, as soon as the greedy owners, “SCentre” see the huge success the NightQuarter has been, the old Money Grab $$$$$$ appears. Shame, shame, shame SCentre. That lovely corner position, close to all public transport, will now sit vacant as a reminder of how GREEDY big Corporations are. Shame to the lot of you SCentre, commiserations to NightQuarter.

Well it was average food at best and the owners must have had blinkers on to think a venue close to high residential areas would accept music ever weekend overpowering there off time from work ! The owners must be dreaming big time ! Go west or go broke I say . Eat street Brisbane does it so much better and always have.

We were very excited when NightQuarter came to Helensvale. Finally, something up our end of the coast. Normally the southern end only ever gets the entertainment. My husband, daughter and I have enjoyed this venue since its inception. Someone complained about the entry fee below, unbelievable, it was only $3, hardly going to break the family bank I am sure. Food costs were in line with Eat Street in Brisbane; have been there as well. The community spirit at NightQuarter was always enjoyable, we saw some great entertainment and even had lots of fun on the pretty wonky pool tables.… Read more »
