Man faces court over Helensvale shooting

UPDATE: A man accused of violently confronting his ex wife in the car park of the Westfield Helensvale faced Southport Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The man who has not been named, has been remanded in custody until November 20.

He will undergo a mental health check before his next appearance.

Earlier a man charged with the attempted murder of his former wife after he allegedly tried to shoot her in the car park of a major Gold Coast shopping centre on Saturday, was slapped multiple further offences, including breaching a domestic violence order on Sunday.

It’s alleged the 43-year-old Nundah man bailed up his estranged wife in the car park just after 10am on Saturday, struck her with the butt of a .22 rifle and, during a struggle, fired a shot.

The man was tackled and disarmed by passersby and the woman retreated to safety with her children and was later taken to hospital for treatment to a head injury. Thankfully, no one else was injured.

The man was today additionally charged with unlawful possession of weapon, dangerous conduct with weapon and contravention of domestic violence order.

He will face Southport Magistrates Court on tomorrow, August 18.

Investigations are continuing with detectives from Coomera Criminal Investigation Branch asking for anyone who may have taken footage or images of the incident to contact them on 5514 7755.

SATURDAY: A MAN has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to shoot his estranged wife in front of her four children in the car park of Westfield Shopping Centre in Helensvale today.

The 43-year-old Nundah man is alleged to have bailed up his former wife in the car park just after 10am on Saturday, reportedly striking her with the butt of a .22 rifle.

A struggle ensued between the pair during which time police said a shot was fired.

The man was tackled by members of the public but managed to break free before police arrived and fled the scene in a vehicle.

The 35-year-old woman, nursing a head injury, took possession of the weapon and retreated to safety with her children, all of whom were unharmed.

She was later taken to hospital for treatment.

The Nundah man handed himself into Coomera Police Station a short time later where he was charged with attempted murder.

He will face Southport Magistrates Court on Monday, August 18.

FIRST: THERE was chaos at a major Gold Coast shopping centre this afternoon after a man armed with a gun allegedly bashed his estranged wife in front of horrified onlookers.

Police were called to Westfield Helensvale around 11am on Saturday following reports of an armed man at the complex.

Witnesses said they saw the man pull a woman – believed to be his former wife – from a vehicle in the car park and start choking her before he allegedly pulled out a gun.

There are reports that, during the struggle, a shot was fired.

It’s understood the highly agitated man was tackled and disarmed by passersby, including security.

The violent scenes played out in front of the woman’s young children. The extent of the woman’s injuries are unclear but are said to be not life threatening.

Detectives cordoned off a section of the car park and established a crime scene.

The man tonight remains in police custody. There is no further information available at this time.
