Man charged with intent to murder after ‘deliberately’ setting fire to unit

A MAN has been charged with a string of offences, including destroy building by fire with intent to murder, after he allegedly deliberately set his unit alight.

Just before 6.00pm on Sunday, emergency crews rushed to a unit block in Portland Crescent at Maroubra after receiving reports a unit was on fire.

When crews arrived, they found the ground floor unit well engulfed in flames.


Nearby residents were evacuated while firies worked to extinguish the blaze.

A crime scene was established at the property and following investigations, a 30-year-old man was arrested nearby and taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

The man was released and taken to Maroubra Police Station where he was charged with destroy/damage building by fire with intent to murder, damage property by fire/explosive, destroy /damage property with intent to endanger life, not keep firearm safe and possess unregistered firearm.

He was refused bail and is expected to appear in Waverley Local Court today.
